In this history of right-wing politics in Brazil during the Cold War, Benjamin Cowan puts the spotlight on the Cold Warriors themselves. Drawing on little-tapped archival records, he shows that by midcentury, conservatives--individuals and organizations, civilian as well as military--were firmly situated in a transnational network of right-wing cultural activists. They subsequently joined the powerful hardline constituency supporting Brazil's brutal military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985. There, they lent their weight to a dictatorship that, Cowan argues, operationalized a moral panic that conflated communist subversion with manifestations of modernity, coalescing around the crucial nodes of gender and sexuality, particularly in relation to youth, women, and the mass media. The confluence of an empowered right and a security establishment suffused with rightist moralism created strongholds of anticommunism that spanned government agencies, spurred repression, and generated attempts to control and even change quotidian behavior. Tracking how limits to Cold War authoritarianism finally emerged, Cowan concludes that the record of autocracy and repression in Brazil is part of a larger story of reaction against perceived threats to traditional views of family, gender, moral standards, and sexuality--a story that continues in today's culture wars.

A obra aborda a sociabilidade entre os imigrantes italianos e suas relações de poder com a Igreja Católica e o Estado Brasileiro entre os anos de 1885 e 1945 na colônia de Antônio Prado no estado do Rio Grande do Sul. A partir de 1885, os imigrantes italianos começaram a derrubar a mata para ocupar os espaços e os lugares da colônia, onde reproduziram as vilas de origem da Itália com uma arquitetura própria. O estudo busca examinar os conflitos surgidos durante a formação de uma nova identidade denominada "ítalo-brasileira" na colônia, constituída através da religião católica e do talian como língua de identificação cultural. Os imigrantes adaptaram as tradições e os costumes que trouxeram da Itália para o Brasil à nova realidade vivida na colônia, onde adquiriram características próprias da sociedade rural. A catolicidade e a italianidade dos imigrantes italianos na colônia se formaram e se desenvolveram nas Sociedades da Capela, as quais possibilitaram o surgimento de uma identidade local própria com base na tradição e nos valores familiares e comunitários.

Pascam in Judicio: a constituição humana na perspectiva católica aborda os ideais católicos sul-rio-grandenses no período de 1912 a 1946, no que tange à educação e à constituição humana. A obra tem a intenção de compreender em que medida a figura e a atuação de Dom João Becker contribuíram e/ou interferiram na constituição de um ideal humano, tendo a educação como principal mecanismo à sua efetivação. O período examinado foi, justamente, a época em que D. João se constituiu em autoridade máxima da Igreja Católica no Rio Grande do Sul. Nesse contexto, percebe-se que a educação se apresentou como possibilidade de determinação de valores e ideais católicos. Buscando uma "sociedade perfeita", constituída igualmente por homens perfeitos, a Igreja Católica via em seus ideais a possibilidade de concretização dessa sociedade. Constata-se que a Igreja Católica se considerava uma educadora soberana e perfeita, e, por intermédio da atuação de seu clero, sob o comando de D. João, buscava inculcar seus ideais mesmo em contextos político-econômicos adversos. A atuação católica, no período analisado, deixou, sem dúvida, muitas marcas, e influenciou a estrutura educacional hodierna.
