La Democrazia Cristiana è vissuta esattamente mezzo secolo. Non ha mai conosciuto l'opposizione ed ha sempre governato l'Italia. Un partito di cattolici era stato già proposto agli elettori da don Luigi Sturzo dopo la prima guerra mondiale, ma l'inesperienza ed alcune divisioni del gruppo dirigente avevano fatto perdere la lucidità necessaria a cogliere per tempo i pericoli del fascismo. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale nasce la DC con via libero della Chiesa. I primi anni sono quelli fondamentali per portare l'Italia nell'alleanza atlantica e conseguire il ritorno nei consessi internazionali. Non è stato semplice. De Gasperi che si assume l'onere di rappresentare questa Italia nuova alla conferenza di pace indetta dai vincitori della seconda guerra mondiale non ottiene buoni risultati. Quando sale a parlare sul podio, nessuno gli stringe la mano, nessuno applaude, i vincitori impongono un trattato di pace vessatorio, ma De Gasperi pronuncia un memorabile discorso e riesce ad ottenere la fiducia almeno dell'amministrazione a stelle e strisce. Il partito è vivace e raccoglie i migliori giovani allevati nel mondo cattolico, sono visionari e preparati: Fanfani, Dossetti, La Pira i più noti. Portano idee nuove in materia di politica economica, non credono al mercato libero e studiano i correttivi per praticare uno sviluppo che possa coniugarsi con la solidarietà. De Gasperi muore quando ancora il partito ha bisogno di un leader unico capace di impostare le regole della successione tra le generazioni e la continuità rispetto alla prospettiva di un necessario rinnovamento. Da quel momento il partito non troverà più un unico capo, ma sarà a guida plurale. La pluralità comporta inevitabilmente la divisione in gruppi anche noti come correnti che hanno delle lievi diversità di programma, ma che sono agguerrite nella lotta interna. Dopo Fanfani ci sarà il periodo di Aldo Moro, poi quello di Mariano Rumor, poi Giulio Andreotti e poi tutto si interrompe per via dei drammatici fatti di via Fani con l'uccisione della scorta, il rapimento di Moro, il sequestro con lo stillicidio di lettere e comunicati, il bivio tra la trattativa e la fermezza, fino alla tragica esecuzione. Il piombo brigatista uccide Aldo Moro, ma cambia la storia della DC oltre che del Paese. Il partito non è più lo stesso, si scopre sotto attacco, incapace di reagire, impotente. La Chiesa cattolica ha subito il fenomeno della secolarizzazione della società italiana reso evidente dal referendum del 1974 sul divorzio e decide di puntare ad uno spirito ecumenico del cattolicesimo proiettato ad una visione mondiale piuttosto che alle vicende politiche italiane. Un racconto spesso critico e per niente celebrativo, ma teso a comprendere la parabola dell'esperienza democristiana: l'inizio, il punto di massimo consenso, l'inizio della traiettoria discendente. L'autore appartiene ad una generazione che nel 1993, data della scomparsa del partito, aveva 20 anni ed aveva scelto di militare da giovanissimo nelle fila della Democrazia Cristiana. Al lettore di oggi può sembrare una scelta comoda, opportunistica, invece i giovani della fine degli anni 80 e l'inizio degli anni 90 erano in prevalenza militanti della FIGC, l'organizzazione giovanile comunista, ed andava forte anche il Fronte della gioventù, l'organizzazione della destra postfascista. Militare nel movimento giovanile della DC era una scelta controcorrente ed all'esplosione di tangentopoli, nel secondo semestre del 1992, era un vero e proprio atto di coraggio, perché la caccia al democristiano colpiva anche i giovani. Eppure ancora alla fine degli anni 80 quando la storia sentenziò che il comunismo aveva perso e che la DC aveva scelto la parte giusta molti intellettuali, rassegnati, scrivevano che il destino degli italiani era quello di morire democristiani. The first comprehensive study of Italian Christian Democracy in English, Italy's Christian Democracy unravels the encounter between Catholicism and democracy from pre-unification Italy in the eighteenth century to the near-present. Forlenza and Thomassen put the triumphant emergence of the Christian Democratic political party that ruled Italy from 1948 to 1994 into historical perspective. With a focus on critical moments of modern Italian history - the Enlightenment and French Revolution, the Risorgimento, World War I, the fascist period, World War II, the post-war Republic - Italy's Christian Democracy demonstrates the often-dramatic ways in which Catholic thinkers, from laymen to priests and bishops, sought to interpret and direct democratic thought and practice in line with Catholic ethics. The Christian Democracy was much more than reactionary politics - namely a sincere attempt to integrate a religious worldview into modern politics. Contrary to a purely secular reading, the authors demonstrate that the Catholic embrace of political modernity and democracy emerged as a historically significant alternative to both fascism and socialism, liberalism and conservativism, attempting to re-anchor democracy, justice, and freedom in a religiously argued ethos.
