On November 16, 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Soviet Commissar of Foreign Affairs Maxim Litvinov signed an agreement establishing diplomatic ties between the United States and the Soviet Union. Two days later Roosevelt named the first of five ambassadors he would place in Moscow between 1933 and 1945. Caught between Roosevelt and Stalin tells the dramatic and important story of these ambassadors and their often contentious relationships with the two most powerful men in the world. More than fifty years after his death, Roosevelt's foreign policy, especially regarding the Soviet Union, remains a subject of intense debate. Dennis Dunn offers an ambitious new appraisal of the apparent confusion and contradiction in Roosevelt's policy one moment publicizing the four freedoms and the Atlantic Charter and the next moment giving tacit approval to Stalin's control of parts of Eastern Europe and northeast Asia. Dunn argues that "Rooseveltism," the president's belief that the Soviet Union and the United States were both developing into modern social democracies, blinded Roosevelt to the true nature of Stalin's brutal dictatorship despite repeated warnings from his ambassadors in Moscow. Focusing on the ambassadors themselves, William C. Bullitt, Joseph E. Davies, Laurence A. Steinhardt, William C. Standley, and W. Averell Harriman, Dunn details their bruising arguments with Roosevelt over the president's repeated concessions to Stalin. Using information uncovered during extensive research in the Soviet archives, Dunn reveals much about Stalin's policy toward the United States and demonstrates that in ignoring his ambassadors' good advice, Roosevelt appeased the Soviet leader unnecessarily. Sure to generate new discussion concerning the origins of the Cold War, this controversial assessment of Roosevelt's failed Soviet policy will be read for years to come.

Working as a public school teacher for forty years teaching all grade levels and at NASA as an education consultant, along with her work as a doctor of clinical hypnotherapy, has given Judy the background and credibility that she needs to carry out her mission. On a hot Florida summer day in August, 1952, Ruby McCollum, the wealthy African-American wife of Suwannee County’s Bolita King, murdered Dr. C. LeRoy Adams, a beloved white physician and recently elected state senator. The sensational murder trial was widely covered in newspapers ranging from the New York Times to The Times in London, and was the first of its kind since 1855. Now the story of a forbidden interracial love affair gone wrong is recounted by an author who was a neighbor to the McCollum family and delivered by Dr. Adams. Dr. Ellis’ odyssey to discover the truth behind the murder began with locating the lost transcript of the trial—which was both manually transcribed and wire recorded. He then published an annotated copy to discredit statements by some scholars that McCollum was not allowed to testify in her own defense. In the Afterword of this book, Ellis now addresses McCollum’s most telling statements to her attorneys— “I was caught between two guns,” and “I don’t know whether I did right or whether I did wrong”—and proposes an intriguing moral alternative to societally defined concepts of “right” and “wrong” for African-Americans who lived in the Jim Crow South.

This is a true story, a series of events that transpired in my life which I deemed necessary to expose and by so doing alert others to vigilance. Naturally, the subject matter is sensitive both for me and all parties involved. I can never discount the relevance of demons, deny their reality and their harassing ways. If and when I was to do so, I would magnify the role of human agents. Frequently, even mature Christians underestimate the magnitude of the spiritual warfare enlisted in from the time of the new birth. We are in a severe struggle, persistently and subtly driven by powerful, spiritual opposing forces beyond our comprehension. Often we rely on human resources and fail to use the spiritual source available to us through the power of the Holy Spirit. I fell in the fourth generation of my maternal fore-parents lineage to suffer unnecessary heartbreaking consequences because of spiritual ignorance. Since I came to see the light of Jesus Christ, I made up my mind to loose all yokes of bondage over my generation and the ones to come after me should Christ tarry. I now know demonic spirits are to be kept afar and never be trusted. Even though at times through subtlety we may be deceived to think that certain spirits work for the good and well-being of a person, such deception should be seen as a trap, a means of securing the individual into a mesh. Sooner or later, such individual will be caught unaware and conquered. It should never be a surprise how the Devil, the starch enemy of the saints, will use anyone, foe and often those who would be considered ally, to win a person over to cause him to fall. Read on and enjoy this treat to your spiritual health!

A compelling story about the destiny of an Australian soldier in the Vietnam war. As a returned Vietnam veteran, it brought back many vivid memories of my time there. Beautifully written and well researched with thought to detail, captivating and difficult to put down, not knowing what was about to happen next. Thoroughly recommend this as an excellent read on the life of an amazing Aussie soldier. - David McQuaid.
