This book offers a general theory of violent radicalization and uses case studies from a variety of different countries and groups to illustrate this. The first and fundamental objective of the book is to provide an explanatory framework to understand phenomena related to violent radicalization, deradicalization, the prevention of radicalization and to political violence; in particular, that inspired by religion. The second objective follows from the first. Understanding violent radicalization of religious inspiration implies delving into two key concepts: violent radicalization and religion. This second objective is indeed elusive, since, on the one hand, many liberal democracies have undergone processes of secularization or, at least, have lost interest in examining religion in public debates. Therefore, rigorously exploring social problems where religion seems to be involved, in one way or another, is complicated. Moreover, the notion of violent radicalization, in turn, is highly contested and confused with other ideas, such as polarization, extremism, terrorism or nonviolent radicalization. Finally, the book aims to bring theory into dialogue with empirical phenomena, and to test it against concrete cases related to violent radicalization and its prevention, on the one hand, and religion, on the other. The book’s originality comes from both its innovative, methodological approach and its breadth, with cases from several countries (Spain, the United States, Ireland, India, Israel, Russia and Colombia) and different ideological groups (revolutionary communists, nationalist movements, Jihadist groups, white and black supremacists). This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism and political violence, radicalization, sociology and international relations in general.

Esta obra invita a pensar las filosofías clásicas del Sāṃkhya y el Yoga, adaptándolas a una perspectiva contemporánea en la que se conjugan la investigación filosófica y la contemplación práctica. Por otro lado, cuestionamos abiertamente el estatuto «clásico» que se le concede a los dos textos que analizamos, las Sāṃkhyakārikāy los Yogasūtra, mostrando la riqueza y heterogeneidad de la Filosofía india, cuya historia en ocasiones se ha visto reducida a planteamientos simplistas que no hacen justicia al hervidero de ideas, pensadores, y corrientes que la componen. La interpretación postmoderna que ofrecemos en este texto no pretende ser la definitiva, sino contribuir a un debate filosófico –y no meramente filológico o historiográfico- sobre los temas que estas filosofías contemplativas nos exhortan a reflexionar y practicar, a nosotros, seres humanos del siglo xxi.

El jesuïta reusenc Pere Gil i Estalella (1550-1622) fou una personalitat rellevant del seu temps: lul·lista, assessor de bisbes i institucions, confessor de virreis, defensor de les bruixes, qualificador del Sant Ofici, procurador dels processos de canonització de sant Ignasi a Barcelona, Manresa i Montserrat, tres vegades rector del col·legi de Betlem de Barcelona, rector del col·legi de Monti-sion a Palma i provincial d’Aragó de la Companyia de Jesús. Entre les seves obres destaquen la publicació d’un art de ben morir i la traducció al català del Contem[p]tus mundi. Aquest llibre ofereix l’edició del manuscrit 112 de la Biblioteca Pública Episcopal de Barcelona (BPEB), que conté la Història moral de Cathalunya de Pere Gil, el primer projecte reeixit d’història de Catalunya a l’època moderna, llibre segon d’un projecte més ampli, la Història cathalana, que inclou també una geografia del Principat, llibre primer, inèdit fins al 1949, quan Josep Iglésies l’edità; una Història ecclesiàstica de Cathalunya, llibre tercer, avui perdut, i unes Vidas dels sants de Cathalunya, llibre quart. L’edició va acompanyada d’un estudi introductori que inclou la biografia de l’autor i d’una segona part que s’ocupa de la contextualització de l’obra dins la historiografia catalana de l’època moderna en què es palesa l’ambició i l’originalitat de la Història moral de Cathalunya.
