This study assesses the causal relationship between corporate social performance (CSP) and financial performance (FP). We perform our empirical analyses on a sample of 179 publicly held Canadian firms and use the measures of CSP provided by Canadian Social Investment Database for the years 2004 and 2005. Using the quot;Granger causalityquot; approach, we find no significant relationship between a composite measure of a firm's CSP and FP, except for market returns. However, using individual measures of CSP, we find a robust significant negative impact of the environmental dimension of CSP and three measures of FP, namely return on assets, return on equity, and market returns. This latter finding is consistent, at least in the short run, with the trade-off hypothesis and, in part, with the negative synergy hypothesis which states that socially responsible firms experience lower profits and reduced shareholder wealth, which in turn limits the socially responsible investments.

This study examines the causal relationships between the various dimensions of corporate social responsibility (human resources, human rights in the workplace, societal commitment, respect for the environment, market behavior and governance) and financial performance (return on equity, return on assets, market to book ratio).Research Findings/Insights: This study is based on a sample of 329 listed companies in three geographical areas (the United States, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region) for the years 2009 and 2010. Linear regression analysis and the Granger causality test were used to examine the causal relationships between social responsibility and financial performance. The results show not only that greater social responsibility does not result in better financial performance, but also that financial performance negatively impacts corporate social responsibility.Theoretical/Academic Implications: This study seems to confirm the Managerial Opportunism Hypothesis which postulates that corporate social responsibility has a negative influence on financial performance. In this sense, it contradicts the hypothesis of a virtuous circle, i.e. there is a positive relationship and mutual reinforcement between financial performance and social responsibility.Practitioner/Policy Implications: This study raises questions about the changes that must be made in corporate social responsibility towards greater “shared value”. This implies taking the needs of stakeholders seriously and forming alliances with the various local actors. The challenge is not to protect the environment in which businesses operate, but that businesses, through gaining the respect and esteem of their partners, should enhance their competitiveness. In doing so, companies create economic value by creating social value.

What is the relationship between the social performance of companies and their financial performance? More colloquially, can a firm effectively attend to both people and profits as it conducts its business? This question has been investigated in no fewer than 95 empirical studies published since 1972. The authors have assembled a compendium of this research to give researchers and practitioners alike a broad overview of these 95 studies and a systematic database detailing the content of each one. This book provides a comprehensive portrait of this research literature. It begins with a broad orientation to the literature, exploring why the link between social and financial performance has been subject to continual inquiry and often heated debate. The authors then present an integrated overview of the 95 studies. Through the charts and tables, the authors illuminate the nature of the studies conducted; the data samples selected for investigation; the ways in which financial and social performance have been measured; and the overall tally of results.

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 9 out of 10 (max. 10), , course: 3, language: English, abstract: Several research studies have examined corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its effects on business performance, but their results vary widely. This paper studies the interaction between social, environmental and short-term financial performance. Using a sample of the 16 largest multinational FMCG companies from the US and Europe covering the period 2005-2012 and employing two different test methods, namely ordinary least squares (OLS) and Granger causation. We demonstrate that while all CSR dimensions have significant financial effects, there has been only one causality link found between employment structure and short-term profitability.

In the recent decade, the study of the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CRS) and firm's financial performance has been a hot topic in the academic world. This study examines the linkage between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate financial performance. In this study, we investigate the relationship by analyzing the correlation of the corporate social responsibility rating based on KLD scores and several financial performance measurements based on accounting measures. The result indicates that there are significant correlations between corporate social responsibility and corporate financial performance. Though, this study does not explore the direction of the causality between them, where further research can be done to have a better understanding of the relationship.

Since the 1970's Anglo-American studies have investigated the theme of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Numerous studies have focused on the analyzes of the possible costs and benefits that would result from the implementation of socially responsible initiatives in order to understand whether such initiatives entail economic and financial loss, or on the contrary, whether they guarantee the achievement of a competitive advantage. To this aim, numerous quantitative studies have been carried out to establish, largely in samples of multiple industries, the relationship between corporate social performance (CSP) and corporate financial performance (CFP). Such analyzes, however, have produced conflicting results and any attempt to give a generalized and coherent conclusion has proved inadequate. The present work attempts to investigate the possible connection between social performance and financial performance in the banking sector. In a sample of national and international banks, the eventual correlation between social performance (proxied using ethical ratings) and financial-economic performance (proxied using market and accounting ratios) has been examined. It emerges from these analyzes that there is no statistically significant link that indicates any positive or negative correlation between CSP and CFP.

The decision to engage in corporate social action (CSA), and the debates regarding its costs, benefits and implications to corporate performance represent a demanding issue for scholars and managers. Research is inconclusive regarding the causal relations between CSA, corporate social performance (CSP) and corporate financial performance (CFP), despite numerous empirical and theoretical studies devoted to the issue. This book presents an in-depth study of corporate social action and the factors influencing a decision to engage in it. Going beyond the causal relationship between CSA and firm performance, the book stresses the link between CSA and a firm's core managerial policies and practices, reflecting the complexity and varied facets of CSA and the numerous internal and external factors that influence its outcomes. The book draws on the experiences of various industrial sectors to reveal the importance of a range of issues such as top management pay dispersion and ownership structure, which may influence the firm's decision to engage in CSA. It also explores some of the external influences on firms, such as institutional norms, the geopolitical environment and the industrial sector. The first part of the book provides an overview of the thematic issues of CSA and performance. The second part presents a series of empirical studies that examine factors and determinants of CSA. The third part presents case studies to illustrate the processes and outcomes of CSA policy and strategy in environmentally hazardous industries.
