A canção O que é que a baiana tem? foi lançada pela estrelíssima Carmen Miranda no cinema, no rádio e no disco. A partir deste sucesso, Dorival ganhou o reconhecimento de seu valor como cantor, por suas atuações nas Rádios Tupi, Transmissora, Nacional e Mayrink Veiga. A importância de Caymmi na carreira de Carmen, seu convívio com os colegas de profissão, além dos conflitos entre artistas, emissoras, gravadoras e imprensa são analisados pela autora. Também ganham destaque neste rico recorte da carreira de Caymmi, a influência dos intelectuais de esquerda, como Jorge Amado e dos grupos do empresário Carlos Guinle e dos compositores envolvidos na luta pelo direito autoral.
