Prezentul volum a fost alcătuit pentru a oferi o interpretare sintetică a istoriei româneşti, de la apariţia statului român până astăzi, cu o anumită insistenţă asupra curentelor de gândire şi a celor artistice manifestate în acest interval de timp. El nu este un tratat, căci, aşa cum bine observa folcloristul Ovidiu Bîrlea, „într-un tratat sunt dezbătute toate aspectele domeniului, proporţional cu importanţa lor, în fapt cu suma cunoştinţelor dobândite până la acea dată”1. Un astfel de scop nu mi-a stat în intenţie aici. Am fost interesat mai curând de dinamica de factură culturală din interiorul noului stat, inclusiv prin recursul abundent la opiniile unora dintre principalii săi protagonişti şi observatori. „Mircea Eliade spunea undeva că «e totdeauna penibil să vorbești despre lucruri prea triste și umilitoare pentru neamul tău». Și totuși, a le ține cu totul sub tăcere, tot timpul, nu poate decât să păgubească o bună cunoaștere a adevărului despre trecut și, până la urmă, și cunoașterea de sine. Mi-am asumat riscul de a le aduce în discuție pe unele, acordându-le un spațiu anume, pentru a contribui la întregirea imaginii despre trecutul nostru, care nu a fost numai spini, dar nici doar flori.” (Ovidiu Pecican) Prin noua sa carte, Ovidiu Pecican aduce în fața cititorilor, cu strălucirea unui maestru, zbaterile dramatice, în plan politic și cultural, ale elitelor naționale ale celei de-a doua jumătăți a secolului al XIX-lea, ale chinuitorului secol XX și ale primelor două decenii ale secolului nostru. This comparative attempt, intended for postgraduates and scholars of Eastern-Central Europe, investigates the political, economic, and cultural landscape of Habsburg Galicia and the Romanian Kingdom in the second half of the 19th century. Often, in historiography and in the public sphere alike, the two cases under study have been separately regarded as contexts that provided atypical answers to modernity, and parts of a region that has been regarded as atypical in itself. Recently, efforts have been made to integrate each of the cases in a post-imperial paradigm, identifying the complex interactions between their socio-political modernisation and historical memory. This book continues this trend by investigating for the first time the two cases together, as parts of a space of alterity, as labs of shifting ideologies and labels. The public figures and the institutions depicted in the book are physically located in Central and in Eastern Europe, but by sometimes competing experiences they are illustrative for several identities and historical realms, local, regional, and continental. Secondly, the current work addresses dilemmas related to Nationalism and nation building, for the sake of separating those discourses which reflected on civic nationalism from those which directed the public mind to the values of ethnic nationalism.
