L’infortuné jeune homme épouse peu après une veuve énergique et à l’esprit pratique qui s’évertue à le ramener dans le droit chemin. Après avoir tenté bien des expériences pour faire vivre sa famille, il se résout à pratiquer le métier de clerc de notaire. Bientôt appelé à travailler au service du secrétaire de l’intendant Bigot, Clément a vent de toutes les intrigues de ce personnage et de sa bande qui s’enrichissent aux dépens des gens du peuple. Ces malversations finiront toutefois par être découvertes et Clément deviendra éventuellement un témoin important lors du procès de ces malfaiteurs en France. Comme quoi la corruption et les procès qu’elle engendre ne datent pas d’aujourd’hui ! Notes particulières : Ce roman plaira à coup sûr aux amateurs de romans historiques, et à tous les lecteurs qui se sont délecté de la saga La Force de vivre, qui a imposé l’auteur.
