After the end of communism and the breakups of the studiously anational polities of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia into successor nation-states, nationalism and ethnicity returned to the fore of international politics. Earlier these forces had been relegated to the back burner of history when the Cold War struggle unfolded. But even then the process of decolonization had been none other but the gradual globalization of the nation and nation-state as the most legitimate forms of modern-day peoplehood and statehood. At present, nationalism is the sole uncontested global ideology of statehood legitimization. The ethnic variety of this ideology also forms the basis upon which stateless groups reinvent themselves as nations in order to be able to lay claim to territorial autonomy or separate statehood. This volume inaugurates a new Peter Lang book series, Nationalisms across the Globe, devoted to these burning issues, which shall influence the near future of the world. From a geographical perspective, this collection focuses mainly on Central and Eastern Europe and also Southern Africa. Amid the rising nationalism and racial politics that culminated in World War II, European countries wishing to "purify" their nations often forced unwanted populations to migrate. The targeted minorities had few options, but as R. Chris Davis shows, they sometimes used creative tactics to fight back, redefining their identities to serve their own interests. Davis's highly illuminating example is the case of the little-known Moldavian Csangos, a Hungarian- and Romanian-speaking community of Roman Catholics in eastern Romania. During World War II, some in the Romanian government wanted to expel them. The Hungarian government saw them as Hungarians and wanted to settle them on lands confiscated from other groups. Resisting deportation, the clergy of the Csangos enlisted Romania's leading racial anthropologist, collected blood samples, and rewrote a millennium of history to claim Romanian origins and national belonging—thus escaping the discrimination and violence that devastated so many of Europe's Jews, Roma, Slavs, and other minorities. In telling their story, Davis offers fresh insight to debates about ethnic allegiances, the roles of science and religion in shaping identity, and minority politics past and present.

Primordialismul cultural constituie un mănunchi de poziţii mai mult sau mai puţin radicale, ce pun sub semnul întrebării teoriile modernizării din perspectiva introducerii naţiunii ca fenomen autonom în analizele societăţii moderne. Considerăm că - pentru o mai bună înţelegere a mecanismelor de persistenţă şi reproducere a culturii române moderne - putem folosi, critic, abordările primordialiste în înţelegerea naţiuniilor, a identităţilor naţionale şi a culturilor naţionale, la cel puţin două nivele. Le-am întrebuinţat, astfel, fie, direct, prin intermediul instrumentarului teoretic al primordialismului în varianta lui Steven Grosby – concepte precum „teritorialitate”, „conţinut carismatic” etc. – fie, indirect, pentru a caracteriza modul în care este imaginat, reprodus, construit, în mod primordialist, spaţiul naţional în perioada interbelică. Utilizarea unui concept, cum e cel de primordialism, în două registre de semnificaţie atât de diferite încearcă să surprindă - dintr-o perspectivă, din câte ştim noi, aproape nepopulată teoretic în România - câte ceva din fascinantul proces prin care se creează spaţiile, teritoriile, în zonele mai puţin vizibile ale imaginarului naţional. Ne-am axat asupra unor figuri culturale mai puţin cunoscute şi asupra unor polemici neintrate în canonul cultural de după ’89, sperând să găsim astfel nu doar o zonă „virgină”, din punctul de vedere al studiilor ce i-au fost dedicate, ci şi o perspectivă nouă asupra funcţionării culturii interbelice. Am insistat asupra antropogeografilor şi geopoliticienilor interbelici, asupra lui Anton Golopenţia datorită influenţei fundamentale a teoriilor ştiinţelor statului legate de numele lui Hans Freyer în gândirea sociologului român. Savantul german este şi una dintre sursele primordialismului cultural de azi prin intermediul lui Steven Grosby.
