In this first volume of his CELEBRATED CRIMES, Dumas chronicles the annals of the Borgias and the Cenci. The "crimes" of the Borgias are legend; the name of the noted and notorious Florentine family has become a synonym for intrigue and violence, and yet the Borgias have not been without stanch defenders in history. The Cenci are nearly as ill-famed. The beautiful Beatrice Cenci -- celebrated in the painting of Guido, the sixteenth century romance of Guerrazi, and the poetic tragedy of Shelley, not to mention numerous succeeding works inspired by her hapless fate -- will always remain a shadowy figure and one of infinite pathos.(Vol. I of VIII)

In this sixth volume of Dumas's Celebrated Crimes contains, among other material, the famous "Man in the Iron Mask." This unsolved puzzle of history was later incorporated by Dumas in one of the D'Artagnan Romances a section of the Vicomte de Bragelonne, to which it gave its name. But in this later form, the true story of this singular man doomed to wear an iron visor over his features during his entire lifetime could only be treated episodically. While as a special subject in the Crimes, Dumas indulges his curiosity, and that of his reader, to the full. Hugo's unfinished tragedy, Les Jumeaux, is on the same subject; as also are others by Fournier, in French, and Zschokke, in German. This book was not written for children. Dumas has minced no words in describing the violent scenes of a violent time. In some instances facts appear distorted out of their true perspective, and in others the author makes unwarranted charges. The careful, mature reader -- for whom the books are intended -- will recognize and allow for this fact.

In this fifth volume of Celebrated Crimes, Dumas tells the tales of Antoine-Francois Derues and La Constantin. The first was a boy, left an orphan at three years old, brought up at first by a relation who turned him out for theft; afterwards by two sisters, his cousins, who were already beginning to take alarm at his abnormal perversity. This pale and fragile being, an incorrigible thief, a consummate hypocrite, and a cold-blooded assassin, was predestined to an immortality of crime, and was to find a place among the most execrable monsters for whom humanity has ever had to blush. La Constantin maintained a house where, in the night, great ladies crossed the threshold under assumed names and remained there for several days, during which La Constantin and Claude Perregaud, by an infamous use of their professional knowledge, restored their clients to an outward appearance of honor, and enabled them to maintain their reputation for virtue.

Between 1839 and 1841, with significant help from other writers, Alexandre Dumas wrote and published 18 essays about some of the most famous crimes in Europe. Presented in stark and often graphic detail, these included some of the current, and therefore popular cases of Dumas' day. Originally collected in eight volumes, and later in ten, these have been reformatted into two volumes to make them more affordable to own . . . but not a single word of the original text has been changed. For those who study history, true crime, or Western literature, these books represent a unique opportunity to experience crime and criminals from the 19th century perspective.
