Il libro si basa su di una ricerca riguardante Bottai e la mostra da lui promossa nel 1936, tesa alla valorizzazione del sapere tecnico e scientifico nella scuola italiana di allora. Il 16 dicembre 1936 si aprì a Roma, presso il Palazzo delle Esposizioni di via Nazionale, la Prima Mostra Nazionale dell'Istruzione Tecnica, destinata a protrarsi sino al 28 febbraio del '37. Giuseppe Bottai era stato appena nominato ministro dell'Educazione Nazionale ( dal 22 novembre 1936 ) ma in realtà già da tempo, nelle vesti di Governatore di Roma, si era andato interessando di mostre ed architetture, soprattutto relativamente alle questioni urbanistiche capitoline e nell'ambito dei preparativi per l'E 42; il giovane ministro promosse dunque tempestivamente, all'atto del suo insediamento, quell'avvenimento, destinato ad inscriversi in un più ampio progetto culturale.
