Il presente libro compie un’accurata analisi dell’industria della pasta di cellulosa, affrontando alcuni temi fondamentali quali: l’importanza della qualità della carta e il motivo degli elevatilivelli di consumo di materia prima (Cap. 1); le principali caratteristiche dell’industria della pasta di cellulosa (Cap. 2); le dinamiche e i modelli del trasporto dei contaminanti dell’industria della cellulosa e la loro deposizione (Cap. 3). Nel Cap. 4 è stata eseguita un’analisi approfondita delle emissioni non GHG del processo Kraft evidenziando alcuni aspetti tossicologici ed il loro eventuale effetto sinergico. Il Cap. 5 analizza, invece, gli inquinanti ad effetto serra relativi al processo Kraft, gli aspetti tossicologici e le tecnologie considerate a basso impatto ambientale. Un’analisi comparata delle politiche ambientali nel settore, il ruolo dell’industria cartaria nell’economia circolare e la gestione dei rifiuti, considerando anche il ruolo controverso della biomassa, è riportato nel Cap. 6.Sebbene molti studi siano ancora in corso riguardo la sostenibilità di queste industrie, la situazione attuale rimane critica per l’enorme impatto ambientale e sociale a livello globale. Il presente lavoro intende dare delle linee di base di conoscenza al fine di dare supporto a tutti gli attori interessati alla difesa dell’ambiente e del territorio nell’ottica dello sviluppo sostenibile.
