Excerpt from Cenno Storico della Accademia Pontaniana Alla morte di Alfonso I di Aragona l'accademia Alfonsina dalla Reggia passo alla casa del Panormita che ne fu il direttore du rante la vita di quel sovrano; e si riuniva ancora nel Pliniano, villa dello stesso Panormita, posta sul littorale di Resina Benche vecchio il Panormita ed Oppresso da'mali del corpo, non tralascio mai di assistere alle tornate accademiche ed a rendere sempre piu illustre quel consesso di dotti: Neapoli, dice il Pontano Acode miam cxcitavit, ea: qua literis praestantissimi prodiere, et ingrave scenic senectute hoc literatorum licaeum variis propositis quaestionibus fovebat, ac doctissimis exhortationibus inflammabat. Negli ultimi anni di sua vita volle che il Pontano, suo prediletto allievo, la pre sedesse, e sifi'attamente compiacevasene e se ne gloriava tanto, che quando a lui si dirigevano i dotti per controversie letterarie o scien tifiche, diceva loro Itc ad Iovianum, come capo dell'accademia. Cio non pertanto, il Pontano benche ne fosse il vero reggitore, e di or dine dello stesso Panormita ne avesse scritto le leggi si tenne sempre sottomesso al suo amato maestro, e con tanta venerazione, che quante volte gli occorre nelle sue opere di far menzione del l'accademia durante la vita del Panormita, fa sparire la sua persona per mettere in risalto quella del suo protettore e maestro; alla cui morte poi rimastone il capo, l'accademia dal suo nome si disse Pontaniana. The Accademia Pontaniana: A Model of a Humanist Network is an exploration of the vast intellectual networks which developed around the fifteenth century humanist Pontano. It includes the densely knit network which emerged in Naples, the Accademia Pontaniana, as well as the loosely knit networks which developed between the members of this academy and other humanists and academies outside of Naples. Shulamit Furstenberg-Levi points to the links between the Accademia Pontaniana and other sodalities in Southern Italy, and to the lineage between fifteenth century informal academies and sixteenth century institutional Academies. In this study recent sociological theory is applied to understand Renaissance academies and the vertical and horizontal links between them.
