This volume invites us to revisit ideology, censorship and translation by adopting a variety of perspectives. It presents case studies and theoretical analyses from different chronological periods and focuses on a variety of genres, themes and audiences. Focusing on issues that have thus far not been addressed in a sufficiently connected way and from a variety of disciplines, they analyse authentic translation work, procedures and strategies. The book considers the ethical and ideological implications for the translator, re-examines the role of the ideologist or the censor—as a stand-alone individual, as representative of a group, or as part of a larger apparatus—and establishes the translator’s scope of action. The chapters presented here contribute new ideas that help to elucidate both the role of the translator throughout history, as well as current practices. Collectively, in demonstrating the role that ideology and censorship play in the act of translation, the authors help to establish a connection between the past and the present across different genres, cultural traditions and audiences. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Perspectives: Studies in Translation Theory and Practice.

This monograph examines the complex relationship between Antonio Buero Vallejo [1916 - 2000] and the ideologies of Francoist and post-Franco Spain. This monograph examines the complex relationship between Antonio Buero Vallejo [1916 - 2000] and the ideologies of Francoist and post-Franco Spain. The central focus of the study is Buero's political theatre and his employment ofmyth and history to challenge the notion of an España eterna. It also considers Buero's creation of his own myths and his revision of history in order to rationalize and justify his own stance. In his determination towrite and stage committed drama in a repressive society, Buero's choice, with its inherent contradictions and ambiguities, was posibilismo. This book looks at this pragmatic employment of language and silence, both in his art and in his dealings with the censors and with other representatives of the hegemony and analyses how posibilismo both aided and limited him. The monograph also considers Buero's neglected post-Franco theatre, examining the reasons for its initial negative reception and its renewed importance in today's Spain. In these days of digging up the past, Buero's post-Franco insistence on rejecting the pacto de olvido is perhaps more relevantthan ever before. This book is the first comprehensive treatment in English of the ideology and practice of the Inquisitional censors, focusing on the case of Mexico from the 1520s to the 1630s. Others have examined the effects of censorship, but Martin Nesvig employs a nontraditional approach that focuses on the inner logic of censorship in order to examine the collective mentality, ideological formation, and practical application of ideology of the censors themselves. Nesvig shows that censorship was not only about the regulation of books but about censorship in the broader sense as a means to regulate Catholic dogma and the content of religious thought. In Mexico, decisions regarding censorship involved considerable debate and disagreement among censors, thereby challenging the idea of the Inquisition as a monolithic institution. Once adapted to cultural circumstances in Mexico, the Inquisition and the Index produced not a weapon of intellectual terror but a flexible apparatus of control.

The decade immediately following the Bolsheviks' victory in the Russian Civil War saw an artistic and cultural flowering in Russia. Some of the great names of twentieth century culture--Bulgakov, Mayakovsky, Stanislavski, Prokofiev--rose to prominence with the new revolution. At the same time however, this period saw the creation of the complex censorship system which sought to control Russian theatre and literature through funding, censorship of the press, intimidation and violence. Lenin was an unambiguous supporter of total censorship and control of culture, while, interestingly, a young Stalin defended Bulgakov against charges of 'bourgeois' leanings. By charting the direction of theatre, literature and the Bolshevik leadership in this period, Steven Richmond provides a fascinating history of cultural life in communist Russia--and an insight into the character of totalitarianism itself. Essential reading for students and scholars of twentieth century social, literary and cultural history, this will become one of the key works on censorship in the early Soviet Union.

Abstract: There are disagreement and varied results in the research literature when it comes to the relationship between political ideology and support for censorship. In order to better understand how people's self-identification as more liberal or conservative relates to their opinions about expression rights issues, I draw on theory that explains political ideology in terms of ideas about the family. I begin by proposing a model wherein family values and family communication patterns contribute to ideological self-identification, and all three concepts contribute to support for censorship. I then provide detailed definitions of the support for censorship and political ideology concepts. I test the model using data from three samples, collected at different times, using different operationalizations of the concepts of interest. Cluster analysis of family variables and political ideology indicates two groups of respondents that replicate across data sets. Members of the first group come from families with relatively greater conversation orientation in their communication, they also have relatively nurturant family values, are relatively liberal, and support censorship relatively less. Members of the second group come from families with relatively greater conformity orientation in their communication, they also have relatively strict family values, are relatively conservative, and support censorship relatively more. Consistent with the proposed model, individuals who are more strict in terms of their family values tend to be more conservative and support censorship more, whereas individuals who are more nuturant in their family values tend to be more liberal and support censorship less. Additionally, those who come from families where communication is relatively more conformity oriented tend to be relatively more conservative as well. However, family communication was not directly related to support for censorship. Political ideology mediates the relationship between family variables and support for censorship.

This book offers a fascinating picture of how state censorship affected children’s literature translation in post-Civil War Spain. Focusing on the Spanish translations of Mark Twain’s children’s classics The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the author traces the evolution of the censorship system of the Francoist regime and its impact on Spanish children’s literature during the years after the Spanish Civil War. Drawing on the regime’s censorship laws, official censors’ records, and textbooks, she not only examines the censorship imposed on the translations of Twain’s works, but also offers insights into the intricate connections between state censorship and the regime’s educational aims. The book gives a revealing analysis of the ways in which the highly bureaucratic censorship apparatus operated under Franco’s dictatorship, outlining the flaws and fallacies within it, as well as the strategies adopted by publishers and translators to resist the power of the state. While centred on Francoist Spain, the book also explores broader themes of ideology, censorship, and translation, making it a valuable source for scholars of translation studies and Hispanic studies, as well as those with a wider interest in literature, history, and cultural studies.
