Theatre has always been subject to a wide range of social, political, moral, and doctrinal controls, with authorities and social groups imposing constraints on scripts, venues, staging, acting, and reception. Focusing on a range of countries and political regimes, this book examines the many forms that theatre censorship has taken in the 20th century and continues to take in the 21st, arguing that it remains a live issue in the contemporary world. The book re-examines assumptions about prohibition and state control, and offers a more complex reading of theatre censorship as a continuum ranging from the unconscious self-censorship built into social structures and discursive practices, through bureaucratic regulation or unofficial influence, up to detention and physical violence. An international team of contributors offers an illuminating set of case studies informed by both new archival research and the first-hand experience of playwrights and directors, covering theatre censorship in areas such as Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Poland, East Germany, Nepal, Zimbabwe, the USA, Ireland, and Britain. Focusing on right-wing dictatorships, post-colonial regimes, communist systems and Western democracies, the essays analyze methods and discourses of censorship, identify the multiple agents involved, examine the responses of theatremakers, and show how each example reveals important features of its political and cultural contexts. Expanding understanding of the nature and effects of censorship, this volume affirms the power of theatre to challenge authorized discourses and makes a timely contribution to debates about freedom of expression through performance.

A obra é fruto de tese defendida no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Artes Cênicas da UFBA, em 2007. Aborda questões relativas ao teatro em meio ao ideário contracultural, investindo sua argumentação contra a afirmação de que a produção teatral que se dá de 1968 a 1974 é destituída de criticidade. Propondo outro ponto de vista, o livro apresenta e analisa a produção teatral para afirmar que não houve um "vazio cultural" durante o período em que o governo civil-militar esteve no poder e utilizou a censura e a repressão para calar os artistas.

Durante seus mais de 512 anos de existência, o Brasil passou apenas 14 deles – entre 1988 e 2002 – em plena liberdade de expressão. Este livro resulta de um ano de pesquisas sobre os processos de censura prévia ao teatro abertos pela Divisão de Diversões Públicas do Estado de São Paulo. Foi dividido em duas partes: a primeira reconstrói a história da censura desde os tempos coloniais até os dias de hoje; a segunda apresenta os perfis de dois autores perseguidos – Joracy Camargo e Nelson Rodrigues – e de um censor que abominava a perseguição – João Ernesto Coelho Neto. Foi possível criar hipóteses sobre o motivo pelo qual cada veto foi realizado, mas talvez o mais interessante tenha sido perceber que a imprensa combateu a censura às artes muito menos do que podia. Não foram poucos os jornalistas que defenderam algum tipo de controle sobre a criação intelectual e artística no país.

Nesta obra, a autora analisa a obra do dramaturgo português Helder Prista Monteiro, considerado pela historiografia teatral um dos representantes do teatro do absurdo produzido em seu país. O dramaturgo também esteve engajado nas discussões sobre teatro e literatura, e foi, em 1976, um dos sócios fundadores da Associação Portuguesa de Escritores – antiga Sociedade Portuguesa de Escritores, destruída pela polícia política do regime ditatorial, a PIDE (Polícia Internacional de Defesa do Estado) – e, de 1974 a 1990, secretário geral da Sociedade Portuguesa de Escritores Médicos.
