This volume is a direct result of the International Symposium on Japanese Sentence Processing held at Duke University. The symposium provided the first opportunity for researchers in three disciplinary areas from both Japan and the United States to participate in a conference where they could discuss issues concerning Japanese syntactic processing. The goals of the symposium were three-fold: * to illuminate the mechanisms of Japanese sentence processing from the viewpoints of linguistics, psycholinguistics and computer science; * to synthesize findings about the mechanisms of Japanese sentence processing by researchers in these three fields in Japan and the United States; * to lay foundations for future interdisciplinary research in Japanese sentence processing, as well as international collaborations between researchers in Japan and the United States. The chapters in this volume have been written from the points of view of three different disciplines, with various immediate objectives -- from building usable speech understanding systems to investigating the nature of competence grammars for natural languages. All of the papers share the long term goal of understanding the nature of human language processing mechanisms. The book is concerned with two central issues -- the universality of language processing mechanisms, and the nature of the relation between the components of linguistic knowledge and language processing. This volume demonstrates that interdisciplinary research can be fruitful, and provides groundwork for further research in Japanese sentence processing.

Issues in Japanese Psycholinguistics from Comparative Perspectives compiles 31 state-of-the-art articles on Japanese psycholinguistics. It emphasizes the importance of using comparative perspectives when conducting psycholinguistic research. Psycholinguistic studies of Japanese have contributed greatly to the field from a cross-linguistic perspective. However, the target languages for comparison have been limited. Most research focuses on English and a few other typologically similar languages. As a result, many current theories of psycholinguistics fail to acknowledge the nature of ergative-absolutive and/or object-before-subject languages. The cross-linguistic approach is not the only method of comparison in psycholinguistics. Other prominent comparative aspects include comprehension vs. production, native speakers vs. second language learners, typical vs. aphasic language development. Many of these approaches are underrepresented in Japanese psycholinguistics. The studies reported in the volumes attempt to bridge these gaps. Using various experimental and/or computational methods, they address issues of the universality/diversity of the human language and the nature of the relationship between human cognitive modules. Volume 1, Cross-Linguistic Studies, compares Japanese and other languages, including well-studied languages such as English, as well as lesser-studied languages such as Kaqchikel.

Merge In The Mind Brain written by Naoki Fukui and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-21 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This collection of nine papers brings together Naoki Fukui’s pioneering body of work on Merge, the basic operation of human language syntax, from the two distinct but related perspectives of theoretical syntax and neurosciences. Part I presents an overview of the development of the theory of Merge and its current formulations in linguistic theory, highlighting the author’s previously published papers in theoretical syntax, while Part II focuses on experimental research on Merge in the brain science of language, demonstrating how new techniques and the results they produce can inform the study of syntactic structures in the brain in the future. By combining insights from theoretical linguistics and neurosciences, this book presents an innovative unified account of the study of Merge and paves new directions for future research for graduate students and scholars in theoretical linguistics, neuroscience, syntax, and cognitive science.

The present study investigates the effects of developmental principles on processing of Japanese relative clauses. Based on Slobin (1973), a set of developmental principles was formulated in Prideaux (1979): these are the principles of cognitive precedence, functional exploitation, grammatical uniqueness and structural integrity. The operation of these principles in language acquisition is tested on Japanese speaking children's processing of conjoined sentences and relative clauses in comprehension and imitation. Two hypotheses are formulated as to differential processing of four types of relative clauses based on the principle of structural integrity: one concerns predictable ease of processing of left-branching relative clauses (SS,SO types) over center-embedded structures (OS,00 types), and the other concerns ease of processing of subject focused relative clauses (SS,0S types) over object focused ones (SO,00 types). Sixteen children ranged from five to eight in age served as the subjects. The results indicate that the developmental principles are operative in Japanese children's processing of conjoined sentences and relative clauses. Among the relative clause structures, left-branching relative clauses were processed significantly better than center-embedded structures, thus supporting the hypothesis of non-interruption. The other hypothesis which states that subject focus is easier to process than object focus, however, is not supported by the data. The present study indicates that the position of the relative clause is the most important factor to affect the child's processing of relative clause structures. The results that children had considerable processing difficulty with center-embedded structures provide evidence for the universal constraint against interruptions.
