Some of the stockholders in the East had little confidence in the future of the business and were anxious to dispose, of the holdings of land and wind up the affairs of the company. On the other hand the resident manager was firmly convinced of the great future of the Red River Valley and of the business of which he was the active head. He acquired additional stock in the corporation and at the time of his death, in 1892, he owned more than half of the outstand ing stock. He had also acquired considerable land in his own name and established a general store in the vicinity of Amenia. In 1886 he moved his family from Connecticut to North Dakota. His son in -la11 and his gi andsons, 11 ho have since been associated in the em te1 prise, came with him. The sharp rise of house prices in China’s Tier-1 cities has fostered a great deal of commentary about the possibility of bubbles forming there. However, China’s unique housing market characteristics make it difficult to assess the macroeconomic severity of bursting bubbles, even if they exist. These include the setting of land supply and prices by the government, among many others. The presence of overbuilt “ghost cities” greatly complicates the ability of traditional macroeconomic policies to address these concerns. This paper looks at proposals to shore up the mortgage underwriting and legal infrastructure to help China withstand the impact of falling prices, should this occur.
