This international conference, sponsored jointly by the American School of Classical Studies and the British School of Archaeology at Athens, was dedicated to the memories of Alan John Bayard Wace and Carl William Blegen and to their long archaeological collaboration. The main theme of the conference was taken from their pioneering article, "Pottery as Evidence for Trade and Colonisation in the Aegean Bronze Age", Klio 32 (1939). The papers presented reflect the current state of scholarly opinion about prehistoric pottery from Mainland Greece and the extensive trade in that pottery, 50 years after Wace and Blegen's article. With 39 papers by archaeologists from 13 countries, the volume presents comprehensive surveys by period and area, as well as detailed discussions of new finds and problems, ranging from the Early, Middle, and Late Bronze Ages on the Mainland and islands of Greece, as well as Cyprus, the Levant, Egypt, Anatolia and Italy.

Today archaeometric approaches to pottery are commonly utilised in Aegean Bronze Age archaeology. Pottery experts in the Aegean are now able to use various methods based on a well-established scientific framework and comparable data. This state-of-the-art interdisciplinary approach to Aegean ceramics produces a large amount of new and complex data, used by specialists and non-specialists for interpretations about socio-cultural phenomena.0Therefore, the main aim of this conference volume is to bring together archaeometric experts and their scientific questions and data with traditional archaeological pottery analysis. This enables broader archaeological and cultural contextualisation within one particular geographical area and time horizon? the Early Bronze Age 1?2 periods (3000?2300 BC) on both sides of the Aegean.

This book focuses on economic and social changes, particularly during the opening phase of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete. New developments in ceramics that reached Crete at the end of the Neolithic period greatly contributed to the creation of economic, technological, social, and religious advancements we call the Early Bronze Age. The arguments are two-fold: a detailed explanation of the ceramics we call Early Minoan I and the differences that set it apart from its predecessors, and an explanation of how these new and highly superior containers changed the storage, transport, and accumulation of a new form of wealth consisting primarily of processed agricultural and animal products like wine, olive oil, and various foods preserved in wine, vinegar, honey, and other liquids. The increased stability and security provided by an improved ability to store food from one year to the next would have a profound effect on the society. Contents: Part I: 1. Introduction, 2. The Change in Ceramic Technology in EM I, 3. The Clays and the Fired Fabrics, 4. The Pottery Shapes, 5. EM I Surface Treatments and Decoration and their Relation to Fabrics, Shapes, and Methods of Manufacture, 6. Comments and Conclusions on the Pottery; Part II: 7. The Transformation of Cretan Society; References; Index.
