Ceramic Raw Materials, Second Revised Edition points to the consideration that clay is the oldest ceramic raw material. The text outlines that clay can assume different forms in varying conditions and discusses the emergence of other materials that are now being considered as ceramic raw materials. The book presents a discussion on various raw materials other than clay, including silica, natural clays, and silicates such as kyanite, sillimanite, and andalusite. The text also presents an analysis of the composition of these materials, putting emphasis on their strengths and how different processes can alter these materials to form other materials. The varying properties of these materials in different stages are also discussed. The selection can serve as a reference to geologists who want to explore further raw materials other than clay, taking into consideration their potential uses. As clay and other related materials are discussed here, this book can also capture the interest of those involved in pottery and other related disciplines.

This book covers the fundamental aspects of ceramics and refractories. All refractories are ceramics, but all ceramics are not refractories. The book classifies and describes these materials, and examines their availability in nature. It examines the availability of these materials in nature, how they are extracted from nature, and how some of these materials are synthesized, and explains their structure-property correlation. It also addresses how they are designed for various applications and more.

This book is primarily an introduction to the vast family of ceramic materials. The first part is devoted to the basics of ceramics and processes: raw materials, powders synthesis, shaping and sintering. It discusses traditional ceramics as well as “technical” ceramics – both oxide and non-oxide – which have multiple developments. The second part focuses on properties and applications, and discusses both structural and functional ceramics, including bioceramics. The fields of abrasion, cutting and tribology illustrate the importance of mechanical properties. It also deals with the questions/answers of a ceramicist regarding electronuclear technology. As chemistry is an essential discipline for ceramicists, the book shows, in particular, what soft chemistry can contribute as a result of sol-gel methods.

The Conference on Emerging Priorities in Ceramic Engineer ing and Science, held at Alfred University, November 4-6, 1974, was arranged to provide a basis for reassessment of professional goals, procedures and outlook. American priorities among comfort, safety, national prestige, security, convenience and environmental quality are significantly different from those of a dozen years ago. Economic factors have shifted, as exempli fied by scarcities in energy, mate rials and world food supplies. At the same time, demands for safer products, healthier work ing conditions and fairer rules of behavior are making them selves felt. Governmental, corporate and consumer interests are all involved and they are intricately inte rrelated. Higher education, for its part, must not only respond wisely to changing student attitude, itself a part of the national scene, but must gain perspective toward the present and toward changes of yet unknown nature which can be expected in the future. Persistent and pointed questions from engineers, managers, and students were an indication to us of wide-spread concern to understand the new pattern of priorities that is presently emerging. In response to this need, Conference papers were invited from distinguished engineers, scientists, and other specialists; their willingness to contribute from their expertise and their thinking is very much appreciated by the editors. The first four chapters of the volume deal with the larger scene and with the viewpoints of those concerned with it in behalf of government, corporations and the professions.
