This book is primarily an introduction to the vast family of ceramic materials. The first part is devoted to the basics of ceramics and processes: raw materials, powders synthesis, shaping and sintering. It discusses traditional ceramics as well as “technical” ceramics – both oxide and non-oxide – which have multiple developments. The second part focuses on properties and applications, and discusses both structural and functional ceramics, including bioceramics. The fields of abrasion, cutting and tribology illustrate the importance of mechanical properties. It also deals with the questions/answers of a ceramicist regarding electronuclear technology. As chemistry is an essential discipline for ceramicists, the book shows, in particular, what soft chemistry can contribute as a result of sol-gel methods.

A ceramic is a solid material which comprises of an inorganic compound. Such an inorganic compound can be made up of metal, non-metal or metalloid atoms primarily held in ionic and covalent bonds. Earthenware and brick are some common examples of ceramics. In terms of crystallinity, ceramic materials can range from completely amorphous to semi-crystalline, and highly oriented. Earthenware, stoneware and porcelain are examples of fired ceramics which are either vitrified or semi-vitrified. Most ceramic substances exhibit some common properties such as high melting temperature, low ductility, high moduli of elasticity, chemical resistance and poor conductivity. There are various options for the composition and structure of a ceramic due to the broad range of available combinations of elements, bonding and levels of crystallinity. Accordingly, the hardness and toughness of different ceramics can vary considerably. Different approaches, evaluations, methodologies and advanced studies on ceramics have been included in this book. Those with an interest in the field of ceramics would find this book helpful.

Piezoelectricity is the ability of certain crystalline materials to develop an electric charge proportional to a mechanical stress. Since its discovery the piezoelectricity effect has found many useful applications, such as the production and detection of sound, generation of high voltages and frequency, microbalances, and ultra fine focusing of optical assemblies. This book reviews the state of art in polycrystalline piezoelectric ceramic materials, which covers the processing, properties, characterisation, and applications of piezoelectric ceramic materials.
