The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center has conducted the Saga more Army Materials Research Conferences, in cooperation with the Metallurgi cal Research Laboratories of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy of Syracuse University, since 1954. The purpose of the conferences has been to gather together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry, and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a sub ject of importance to the Army, the Department of Defense and the scientific community. Grain size and its control is a major factor governing the behavior of materi als. Knowledge that one can obtain grain sizes in the 10 micron down to sub micron range has established the basis for a new technology. This volume, Ultrafine-Grain Ceramics, addresses itself to the broad areas of: realization of fine-grain ceramics; preparation of ultrafine particle size materials; characterization of ultrafine particles and ultrafine-grain ceramics; processing and behavior of ultra fine-grain ceramics. To date, many types of polymer-derived ceramic fibers have been developed all over the world. Of these, SiC fibers synthesized from polycarbosilane and its derivatives have achieved the highest heat-resistance along with their excellent mechanical properties. Using these type of SiC fibers for the ceramic matrix composite materials, both high-temperature strength and light weight have been achieved. Therefore, these fibers have attracted a great deal of attention in the field of next-generation aerospace engine, nuclear applications, and so on. Furthermore, several types of functional ceramic fibers with surface gradient structures have been developed using derivatives of polycarbosilane. This book summarizes the historical viewpoint of polymer-derived ceramic fibers, basic information (production process, fine structures, physical properties, and so forth) about them, and their applications. HIGH ELECTRICAL RESISTANT MATERIALS The book describes how the utilization of high-carbon slag/pond ash/fly ash for making value-added ceramics is useful for the electrical sectors. Since waste materials are currently endangering our environment, ways of utilizing them have become a global challenge. Currently, R&D work is being carried out to utilize these materials for producing value-added products. This book details the investigations to utilize fly ash (FA) and pond ash (PA) - both waste materials from thermal power plants - with high-carbon ferrochrome (HCFC) slag (by-product of the ferrochrome industry), for producing a novel material for ceramics. Kaolin/K-feldspar is mixed with PA/HCFC slag to produce ceramics with the formation of mullite. The FA/PA/HCFC slag-based ceramics can replace porcelain-based ceramics, and some permanent ceramic structures can be constructed with such wastes. Properties and structures made with ceramics are found to be comparable with those made with porcelain-based ceramics. Performances of these materials above ambient temperature have been evaluated and results indicate the possible replacement of porcelain with these newly invented ceramics. Audience The book will be used by electrical and civil engineers in the electrical, construction, and ceramic industries as well as the industrial waste sector. Researchers in materials science, structural, civil and electrical engineering, environmental science, and ceramic engineering, will also have high interest.
