Penggunaan bahasa Indonesia di ruang publik sejatinya telah diatur dalam Undang-undang Republik Indonesia (UU RI) No 24 Tahun 2009 yang mengatur tentang bendera, bahasa, lambang negara, serta lagu kebangsaan. Pasal 26 ayat 3 berbunyi: bahasa Indonesia wajib digunakan untuk nama bangunan atau gedung, jalan, apartemen atau pemukiman, perkantoran, kompleks perdagangan, merek dagang, lembaga usaha, lembaga pendidikan, organisasi yang didirikan atau dimiliki oleh warga negara Indonesia atau badan hukum Indonesia. Sementara pasal 37 ayat 1 berbunyi: bahasa Indonesia wajib digunakan dalam informasi tentang produk barang atau jasa produksi dalam negeri atau luar negeri yang beredar di Indonesia. Kemudian pasal 38 ayat 1 berbunyi: bahasa Indonesia wajib digunakan dalam rambu umum, penunjuk jalan, fasilitas umum, spanduk, dan atau informasi lain yang merupakan pelayanan umum. Namun nyatanya, penggunaan bahasa Indonesia di ruang publik kerap tidak sesuai kaidah yang benar. Baik itu pada penamaan toko atau bangunan, penulisan infromasi umum yang bersumber dari pemerintah atau masyarakat, hingga papan-papan informasi komersial lainnya. Hasil analisis penulis, kesalahan berbahasa di ruang publik kerap terjadi pada kesalahaan ejaan, penggunaan multilingual atau gabungan bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris maupun bahasa lainnya, struktur gramatikal bahasa, ejaan, dan lain sebagainya.
