"'Cervantes y el Cuarto misterio' es un tratado filosófico acerca del arte narrativo de Cervantes, esto es, sobre 'La Galatea', 'Don Quijote I y II', 'Las Novelas Ejemplares' y 'Persiles'. Pero también es un intento de descifrar el lapis philosophorum del mayor alquimista de las letras, a través de una reflexión profunda sobre el concepto de verosimilitud en el arte del Renacimiento. El problema ontológico del universo acausal expuesto en la narrativa cervantina se considera en esta obra a partir de la proyección narrativa del 'Cuarto misterio' católico. Entendemos que la Cuaternidad que complementa la Trinidad se manifiesta, bien en forma de coincidencias significativas naturales, bien inducida artísticamente en forma de sincrulacros, bien sugerida en extrañas transmisiones acausales de hábitos. Defendemos adenás que la universalidad y prevalencia del arte narrativo cervantino en la historia literaria se explica por el hecho de que es una de las contadas propuestas del arte universal que expresa una preocupación existencial en forma de reflexión autoconsciente dentro de la obra artística sobre el principio regidor de la conciencia acausal, el cual aporta sentido al lado más evidentemente numinoso del ser humano. De hecho, la incapacidad de interpretar correctamente eventos de la realidad acausal constituye la base de la articulación de los personajes cervantinos más trágicos. En la novela cervantina no sólo se aprecia una asimilación y comprensión de ciertos actos de conciencia acausal como las propias sincronicidades, cuyo efecto se induce mediante del arte literario. A éstas también se añaden otros pincipios y recursos metartísticos como la verosimilitud mágica, la cual, de un modo similar al trampantojo, nos fuerza ocasionalmente a asociarnos profundamente con el truco literario tras el cual está el secreto de la obra. Estos y otros artificios literarios que conformen las maneras más efectivas de crear un profundo vínculo entre novela y loector sin duda marcaron el camino para que Cervantes alcanzara el Parnaso de la eterna fama literaria."--taken from back cover.

The Marrano Specter pursues the reciprocal influence between Jacques Derrida and Hispanism. On the one hand, Derrida’s work has engendered a robust conversation among philosophers and critics in Spain and Latin America, where his work circulates in excellent translation, and where many of the terms and problems he addresses take on a distinctive meaning: nationalism and cosmopolitanism; spectrality and hauntology; the relation of subjectivity and truth; the university; disciplinarity; institutionality. Perhaps more remarkably, the influence is in a profound sense reciprocal: across his writings, Derrida grapples with the theme of marranismo, the phenomenon of Sephardic crypto-Judaism. Derrida’s marranismo is a means of taking apart traditional accounts of identity; a way for Derrida to reflect on the status of the secret; a philosophical nexus where language, nationalism, and truth-telling meet and clash in productive ways; and a way of elaborating a critique of modern biopolitics. It is much more than a simple marker of his work’s Hispanic identity, but it is also, and irreducibly, that. The essays collected in The Marrano Specter cut across the grain of traditional Hispanism, but also of the humanistic disciplines broadly conceived. Their vantage point—the theoretical, philosophically inflected critique of disciplinary practices—poses uncomfortable, often unfamiliar questions for both hispanophone studies and the broader theoretical humanities.
