This book presents improved numerical techniques and applied computer-aided simulations as a part of emerging trends in mechatronics in all areas related to complex fluids, with particular focus on using a combination of modeling, theory, and simulation to study systems that are complex due to the rheology of fluids (i.e., ceramic pastes, polymer solutions and melts, colloidal suspensions, emulsions, foams, micro-/nanofluids, etc.) and multiphysics phenomena in which the interactions of various effects (thermal, chemical, electric, magnetic, or mechanical) lead to complex dynamics. The areas of applications span materials processing, manufacturing, and biology.

An understanding of the heat and mass transfer phenomena in porous media implies a good description of the flow behaviour within it; this fact is of fundamental importance to many chemical engineering systems such as packed bed extration or catalytic reaction equipment. In general, porous media is described as an effectively homogeneous system, neglecting the complexities of the flow within the void space studies equipment. The details of this local flow process may, however, be the most important factor influencing the behaviour of a given physical process ocurring within the system. Computational Fluid Dynamics as a simulation tool allows obtaining a more approached view of the fuid flow and transport mechanisms in supercritical packed bed equipment, though the resolution of continuity, momentum, mass and energy balances around the complex geometry of the studies cases. In this book, CFD is used for solving fluid flow and heat and mass transfer phenomena in packed beds with supercritical solvents, developing a modeling strategy applicable to the design of heterogeneous reaction and extration equipment.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), which uses numerical analysis to predict and model complex flow behaviors and transport processes, has become a mainstream tool in engineering process research and development. Complex chemical processes often involve coupling between dynamics at vastly different length and time scales, as well as coupling of different physical models. The multiscale and multiphysics nature of those problems calls for delicate modeling approaches. This book showcases recent contributions in this field, from the development of modeling methodology to its application in supporting the design, development, and optimization of engineering processes.

Computational methods have risen as a powerful technique for exploring the system phenomena and solving real-life problems. Currently, there are two principle computational approaches for system analysis: continuous and discrete. In the continuous approach, the governing equations can be obtained by applying the fundamental laws, such as conservation of mass, momentum, and energy over an infinitesimal control volume. On the other hand, the discrete approach concentrates on mimicking the molecular movement within the system. Both approaches have pros and cons, and continuous development and improvement in the existing computational methods are ongoing. Advanced Computational Techniques for Heat and Mass Transfer in Food Processing provides, in a single source, information on the use of methods based on numerical and computational analysis as applied in food science and technology. It explores the use of various numerical/computational techniques for the simulation of fluid flow and heat and mass transfer within food products. Key Features: Explores various numerical techniques used for modeling and validation Describes the knowhow of numerical and computational techniques for food process operations Covers a detailed numerical or computational approach of the principles of heat and mass transfer in the food processing operation Discusses the detailed computational simulation procedure of the food operation Recent years have witnessed a rapid development in the field of computational techniques owing to its abundant benefit to the food processing industry. The relevance of advanced computational methods has helped in understanding the fundamental physics of thermal and hydrodynamic behavior that can provide benefits to the food processing industry in numerous applications. As a single information source for those interested in the use of methods based on numerical and computational analysis as applied in food science and technology, this book will ably serve any food academician or researcher in learning the advanced numerical techniques exploring fluid flow, crystallization, and other food processing operations.

Engineering Applications Of Computational Fluid Dynamics written by Maher Al-Baghdadi and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-02 with categories.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is the science of predicting fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, phase change, chemical reaction, mechanical movement, stress or deformation of related solid structures, and related phenomena by solving the mathematical equations that govern these processes using a numerical algorithm on a computer. The results of CFD analyses are relevant in: conceptual studies of new designs, detailed product development, troubleshooting, and redesign. CFD analysis complements testing and experimentation, by reduces the total effort required in the experiment design and data acquisition. CFD complements physical modelling and other experimental techniques by providing a detailed look into our fluid flow problems, including complex physical processes such as turbulence, chemical reactions, heat and mass transfer, and multiphase flows. In many cases, we can build and analyze virtual models at a fraction of the time and cost of physical modelling. This allows us to investigate more design options and "what if" scenarios than ever before. Moreover, flow modelling provides insights into our fluid flow problems that would be too costly or simply prohibitive by experimental techniques alone. The added insight and understanding gained from flow modelling gives us confidence in our design proposals, avoiding the added costs of over-sizing and over-specification, while reducing risk. The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics to simulate engineering phenomena continues to grow throughout many engineering disciplines. On the back of ever more powerful computers and graphical user interfaces CFD provides engineers with a reliable tool to assist in the design of industrial equipment often reducing or eliminating the need for performing trial-and-error experimentation. In summary, much progress has been made in engineering applications of CFD. The chapters in this book testify to the vitality of engineering CFD research and demonstrate the considerable potential for use of these techniques in the future. The book is intended to serve as a reference for both researchers and postgraduate students.
