This book is designed for progressive coaches who are motivated to consider and potentially adjust their current coaching or training programs so that they are getting the most out of contemporary Sport Psychology and Skill Acquisition research. A variety of Sport Psychology and Skill Acquisition issues are reviewed by two international experts in the respective fields, Jean Fournier and Damian Farrow. Based on their applied experiences working in their respective high performance sport systems in France and Australia they have identified the gaps between theory and current practice. In some instances, this gap is because the theory itself is not definitive, while in other instances the theory challenges traditional coaching approaches. What makes this book different from many other texts on Sport Psychology and Skill Acquisition is that the material is presented in a manner most applicable to coaches and athletes. Magisterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2019 im Fachbereich Didaktik - Sport, Sportpädagogik, Note: B+, , Veranstaltung: Master of Arts in Olympic Studies, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The study aimed to investigate the challenges and prospects of the implementation of Olympic Education in Southern Africa. Three countries; Eswatini, South Africa, and Zimbabwe were purposively selected for the study. The content document analysis method was used to analyze content in the public domains of the Ministry of Education, National Olympic Committees, and Olympic study centers where applicable. The main themes from the content analysis were presented in the results chapter of the thesis in chapter four. Results suggest that two of the three countries-South Africa and Eswatini, investigated have not professionalized Physical Education (PE) and sport as a compulsory and examinable subject. Zimbabwe professionalized PE in 2015 and implemented the new curriculum in 2016. South Africa is the only Southern African country with an Olympic study center at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Zimbabwe implements Olympic education through Zimbabwe Olympic Academy (ZOA). The OVEP document is the main source of Olympic Education in the South African National Olympic Committee. The study concluded that the challenges of implementing Olympic education in southern Africa are mainly no professionalization of PE and sport and lack of a pedagogical context and structure. The prospects of Olympic education implementation in Southern Africa are premised on the professionalization of PE and sport and the maximum utilization of the University of Johannesburg Olympic study center (UJOSC). The study recommends further qualitative studies be carried out in Southern Africa to increase awareness of Olympic education and also promote the professionalization of Physical Education. It also recommended further that the Olympic study center at the University of Johannesburg take an active lead in providing structures and platforms for Olympic education implementation.

This collection of essays is the result of the debate and discussion at the European Sport Development Network’s (ESDN) annual conference in 2014. ESDN’s vision is to help create an environment where sports policies, programmes and practices are positively influenced by innovative, research-informed insight and collaborations between academics and practitioners. The chapters in this book closely reflect the remit and purpose of the ESDN in that they come from a variety of academics and sport practitioners. Elite sport typically provides obvious rewards in terms of recognition, finance and acclaim for athletic performance. Increasingly, we are becoming aware of the risks that elite athletes, their entourage, including families, sport-science support team and coaches are exposed to. Twelve original articles, seven commentaries and a corrigendum, are structured in a five chapter format. Chapter 1, comprising the Editorial, is titled “An Overview of Mental Health in Elite Sport: Changing the Play Book” to reflect the advocacy role of this article. Chapter 2 (“Finding the Sweet Spot”) amplifies the voice of key stakeholders across three qualitative studies with three additional commentaries. Quantitative evidence is presented in Chapter 3 which has the sub-title the “State of Play.” Chapter 4, entitled the “Field of Play”, includes three original publications which present contrasting conceptual approaches to guide researchers in hypothesis generation, formulation and implementation science. Finally, in Chapter 5, “Seeing the Ball Early”, prospective perspectives are provided in three publications reinforced by two commentaries. The future thinking ideas includes the use of virtual reality training, a broadening of the concept of mental health literacy, tackling stigma and focusing on the potential positive effect of the natural environment on well-being and recovery. To date the research topic has generated widespread in the field. For example, several articles have generated an Altmetric score above 40 with one publication meriting an Altmetric score of 102. We envisage that the impact of this e-book will not simply be measured in citations, views, downloads nor social media impact, but in the discourse that emerges from this collection of contributions from a combined total of 53 authors from across three continents. It is our hope that this e-book, providing a snapshot of global challenges for elite athletes mental health and well-being, becomes a touchstone for researchers and practitioners in the field.
