This book on Nanai shamanic culture is based on first-hand information provided by shamans and recorded in the years between 1980 and 2012, a time of rapid socio-cultural change in Russia. It sheds light on the lively indigenous discourse in which social factors such as the splitting of society into different paternal lineages relates to spiritual troubles that Nanai people experience as collective ‘shamanic disease.’ But inter-clan confrontations are not only mediated in shamanic rituals, as these must not be separated from folk narratives, dances and other forms of art. Furthermore, the book provides profound insights into the plurality of contradictory discourses on indigenous knowledge as well as those delivered in non-indigenous contexts. The latter arose or became more intense in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods, and often led to experiments in new shamanic practices.

A revealing and authoritative history that shows how Soviet whalers secretly helped nearly destroy endangered whale populations, while also contributing to the scientific understanding necessary for these creatures’ salvation. The Soviet Union killed over six hundred thousand whales in the twentieth century, many of them illegally and secretly. That catch helped bring many whale species to near extinction by the 1970s, and the impacts of this loss of life still ripple through today’s oceans. In this new account, based on formerly secret Soviet archives and interviews with ex-whalers, environmental historian Ryan Tucker Jones offers a complete history of the role the Soviet Union played in the whales’ destruction. As other countries—especially the United States, Great Britain, Japan, and Norway—expanded their pursuit of whales to all corners of the globe, Stalin determined that the Soviet Union needed to join the hunt. What followed was a spectacularly prodigious, and often wasteful, destruction of humpback, fin, sei, right, and sperm whales in the Antarctic and the North Pacific, done in knowing violation of the International Whaling Commission’s rules. Cold War intrigue encouraged this destruction, but, as Jones shows, there is a more complex history behind this tragic Soviet experiment. Jones compellingly describes the ultimate scientific irony: today’s cetacean studies benefited from Soviet whaling, as Russian scientists on whaling vessels made key breakthroughs in understanding whale natural history and behavior. And in a final twist, Red Leviathan reveals how the Soviet public began turning against their own country’s whaling industry, working in parallel with Western environmental organizations like Greenpeace to help end industrial whaling—not long before the world’s whales might have disappeared altogether.

The remarkable opening of Siberia and the Russian Arctic to international social science research, starting in the early 1990s, has given rise to the spirit of cooperation, innova- tive partnerships, and the co-production of knowledge across boundaries and academic cultures. These interactions and the heartfelt relationships built by years of collabora- tions are now suspended or at least highly constrained after February 2022. This volume's essays explore various dimensions of the newly fractured North and of the war's impact that poses dilemmas to field practitioners. In this three-part volume, the first in the "Fractured North" series, scholars with decades-long experience in northern Russia document the breakdown of collegial relationships as state control has intensified. Early career professionals consider the ruinous impacts on their planned research trajectories and the new methods of "distant" anthropology. The volume includes several historical essays about the dilemmas that scholars encountered in the face of past repressive regimes and connection breakdowns, and what we might learn from how they dealt with these challenges.

The poet and naturalist Adelbert von Chamisso traveled around the world from 1815 to 1818. His original diaries remained unpublished and are presented here for the first time ever. Chamisso's notebooks contain impressions and scientific results, descriptions of four continents and oceans, geographical sketches, zoological and botanical observations, reports from first encounters with indigenous people. The edition's two volumes present the original text with commentary, essays and glossaries. Like the travel notebooks of Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin, Chamisso's diaries document an early stage in the history of the natural sciences when the spirit of discovery and the trust in the unity of the sciences created a sometimes Eurocentric but also future-oriented consciousness of a newly discovered and unified world.

This volume takes a look at Reinhold and Georg Forster, Alexander von Humboldt and Adelbert von Chamisso both as fellow countrymen and as "foreigners", together with their experiences as travelling writers and naturalists. Drawing upon the legacies of their travels, it reconstructs the practices of writing, gathering and transferring with regards to their role in the genesis of modern knowledge systems. The individual articles within this volume examine the protagonists' horizons, conveyed through their diaries, sketchbooks and letter exchanges, the natural produce and artefacts they collected, as well as their observations of the animal and plant world, landscapes and people. They deal with work-and-effect relationships and interrelationships, including those with other researchers and expeditions.

Although Adelbert von Chamisso created world literature with his Peter Schlemihl narrative and is a canonised author in literary studies, many parts of his prolific work are still under-researched. As yet little of his estate, which has been in the possession of the Berlin State Library since 1937, has been evaluated. The contributions to this anthology can be seen as an endeavour to give a new impetus to Chamisso research. Written from the perspectives of literary studies, linguistics, musicologists and scientific history, the contributors seek to reveal hitherto neglected aspects of Chamisso's multifaceted work as an ethnologist and zoologist, travel writer and poet, editor and correspondent. They focus on Chamisso's networking with the literary and scientific communities of his time and on the broad field of intertextual, intermedial and intercultural references in his texts.

English summary: As a result of his own personal circumstances, the work of Adelbert von Chamisso combines a large number of contradictory life designs, weltanschauung, and literary styles, as well as a confusing abundance of social environments and literary fields. Over a long period of time Chamissos intellectual orientation was erratic and roaming: at first he was a romantic- idealist, then he emerged again, somewhat enlightened, in the form of a romantic poet and an empirical natural scientist, who after his success as a writer of prose returned to writing verse: he organized the production of a poetry periodical and then suddenly became a critic of the Vormarz poets. Defying all attempts to classify him or fit him into any genre, he always remained unpredictable.
