This volume discusses the challenges of Latin America in global environmental geopolitics. Written by leading experts, this book brings together Latin American research on global environmental change. They cover a range of topics such as climate change, water, forest and biodiversity conservation connected with science policies, public opinion, priorities of international funds, and international politics of Latin American countries. The book describes the discrepancy between the international priorities and the regional needs or country interests. It includes several case studies and analyses the cooperation in multilateral negotiations on climate change. It also offers a synthesis of debates around global environmental changes and Latin American politics, which the authors have previously promoted in different academic events in South America, including in Santiago de Chile in Chile, and Buenos Aires and Ushuaia in Argentina. This book assesses the environmental problems from different perspectives, highlights the scientific development in the environmental changes affecting Latin America and offers a new view on geopolitics to help face those issues. Specialist readers in international relations, political sciences, environmental sciences, geography and geopolitics will appreciate this up-to-date examination of Latin America and the global environmental change.

A collection of essays by leading Latin Americans who, apart from being academically distinguished, are placed near the sources of political power in their respective countries and have on occasion advised either their governments or international organizations on specialized problems. Although the authors work in different disciplines and start from different sets of premises, these essays reflect a remarkable coincidence of views which may be described as a civilized impatience with the attempt to use foreign models to interpret Latin American situations. Latin America has a pre-industrial urban civilization that has remained largely untouched by the changes traditionally associated with industrialization.

Since the appearance of the first edition of this text in 1974, the book has stimulated an ongoing debate about the nature of the Latin American development process. Although the essays discuss a wide range of historical, economic, political, and social issues, they are unified in arguing that the Latin American experience of development is subject to special imperatives of analysis and interpretation not generally offered in the Western literature on development and social change. Arguing that West ern models are often inappropriate when applied to Latin America, the authors explore alternative approaches to understanding the Latin American pattern of development and change. The third edition retains classic essays from earlier editions but has been extensively revised to take account of the dramatic changes in the region over the last ten years. Looking particularly at the challenges presented by redemocratization and the new pluralism, the book raises the question of whether a "distinct tradition" still remains. New readings discuss the implications of U.S. foreign policy in Latin America, the changing role of the church, the process of democratization, and human rights issues and speculate on the permanence of Latin America's more pluralistic political structures.

Changing Course In Latin America written by Kenneth M. Roberts and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with POLITICAL SCIENCE categories.

This book explores the impact of economic crises and free-market reforms on party systems and political representation in contemporary Latin America. It explains why some patterns of market reform align and stabilize party systems, whereas other patterns of reform leave party systems vulnerable to widespread social protest and electoral instability. In contrast to other works on the topic, this book accounts for both the institutionalization and the breakdown of party systems, and it explains why Latin America turned to the Left politically in the aftermath of the market-reform process. Ultimately, it explains why this "left turn" was more radical in some countries than others and why it had such varied effects on national party systems.

Social movements, collective action, imaginative campaigning, grassroots politics, empowerment of the excluded, indigenous knowledge, appropriate development, participation, and literacy all have popular education in common. Social and political history in Latin America is hard to understand without knowing about the social movements which have consistently provided the progressive and radical impetus for change. This history of popular education looks at one of the most successful social movements to use popular education, the Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST) in Brazil, as well as theoretical and practical analyses. It highlights the importance of popular education to the "new" social movements based around identity, such as women's and indigenous organizations and includes a biography of Paulo Freire.
