Many educators agree that the 100-point grading model is not always a reliable way to evaluate student learning. But is there another way to more accurately and equitably grade students and provide high-quality information to parents while fostering student learning? If so, why haven’t school districts across the country changed their practices? In Changing the Grade, author and educator Jonathan Cornue presents a detailed model for developing a more reliable, standards-based grading system—including 30 steps to guide you through the process. In addition to identifying and addressing the barriers to change—such as concerns about how colleges and employers will interpret an alternative grading model—Cornue offers a concrete structure for changing the grading system, providing guidance on: • Thinking in a new way about why grades are given and the purpose of a report card grade; • Identifying what needs to be changed and what actions must be taken to facilitate the change; • Building a team of stakeholders—including teachers, principals, and guidance counselors—to lead the change process; • Developing the new standards-based grading structure; • Designing standards-based assignments and assessments that align with a new grading structure; • Avoiding grade inflation; and • Getting buy-in from teachers and other staff members, principals, administrators, the board of education, and the community by demonstrating that the change process is intentional, research-based, student-focused, and permanent. The book also includes helpful samples of standards-based gradebooks, homework assignments, rubrics, and report cards. If you are interested in making a systemic and systematic shift to a high-quality grading structure that is far less subjective than many commonly found in schools, consider Changing the Grade.

What if you could challenge your kindergartners to come up with a way to reduce human impact on the environment? With this volume in the STEM Road Map Curriculum Series, you can! Our Changing Environment outlines a journey that will steer your students toward authentic problem solving while grounding them in integrated STEM disciplines. Like the other volumes in the series, this book is designed to meet the growing need to infuse real-world learning into K–12 classrooms. This interdisciplinary, three-lesson module uses project- and problem-based learning to help students investigate the environment around them, with a focus on ways that humans can impact the environment. Working in teams, students will investigate various types of human impact on the environment (including pollution, littering, and habitat destruction), will participate in a classroom recycling program, and will explore the engineering design process as they devise ways to repurpose waste materials. To support this goal, students will do the following: Identify human impacts on the environment. Identify technological advances and tools that scientists use to learn about the changing environment, and use technology to gather data. Explain, discuss, and express concepts about the environment through development and design of a publication to report their scientific findings about the environment around the school. Chart and understand local weather patterns, and make connections between weather conditions and their observations of the environment. Identify and demonstrate recycling practices, including sorting materials and tracking amounts of materials recycled, and participate in a class recycling program. The STEM Road Map Curriculum Series is anchored in the Next Generation Science Standards, the Common Core State Standards, and the Framework for 21st Century Learning. In-depth and flexible, Our Changing Environment can be used as a whole unit or in part to meet the needs of districts, schools, and teachers who are charting a course toward an integrated STEM approach.

High School and College students are under tremendous pressure to earn top grades for college and graduate school admissions. Unfortunately, few students are taught strategies on how to earn top grades. Most people think they are either "smart" or "not so smart" in various subjects and that determines whether or not a student does well in a class. This simply isn't true. The author of this book received a failing grade in a course and later on earned an "A" in the same subject. The strategies that led to the author failing a course to earning an "A" in the same subject can be found in this book. These strategies were used frequently in other courses which led to the author getting accepted into graduate school. Because of this, the author wants high school, college, and adult learners to learn these techniques to increase their chances of attending the college or graduate school of their dreams.

Results are reported for changes in grade and volume during kiln drying of Shop and Better grades of old-growth, coast range Douglas-fir lumber. Findings indicate that considerably more degrade occurs in the higher lumber grades than in the low. Wide thick lumber degraded more during drying than did narrow thin lumber. Log size and grade do not directly affect the amount of degrade, but may indirectly affect it through the grade and size of lumber produced.

Inconsistent grading practices are a problem throughout the field of education in spite of recommended best practice by grading experts. Many districts function without a grading policy and most classroom teachers are left to figure things out on their own. Most teachers decide how they will grade based on their own, personal, philosophy and many include elements of how they were graded when they were a student. Many teachers have never had a class on assessment or training in assessing students. I realized that my own school district had no grading philosophy and the teachers in my school used a variety of grading practices. With this project I decided to change the lack of consistency in grading by working with a pilot group of teachers who were willing to adopt uniform grading practices. This group of teachers chose the use of rubrics, changing the "weighting" of grades, and modifying their grading practices to reflect best grading practices to make an impact on assessment in the building and in the district. In addition a district-wide grading taskforce was created which included teachers and administrators from all schools and we began the process of identifying what exactly should be a part of a grade for students. Through sharing of research on best practices, piloting new grading strategies, and dialogue among colleagues, I was able to facilitate substantial and meaningful change through this project. These efforts will continue through the grading taskforce as we work to change district wide grading and assessment so that it is consistent between buildings and is based on research.
