Avec cet ouvrage, l'auteur, Pierre Léoutre, a voulu célébrer la permanence de l'histoire du peuple juif au travers de trois chants qui lui sont dédiés. Le premier chant est celui du troubadour Mordecaï Gebirtig qui, au coeur du ghetto de Cracovie, et durant ses pires souffrances, a fait entendre un chant d'espoir et de lucidité. Des poèmes, traduits pour la première fois en langue française par Gil Pressnitzer, éclairent cette histoire moins connue que celle du ghetto de Varsovie et une analyse historique replace ces poèmes dans leur contexte tragique. Un deuxième chant est consacré à un peintre, Pierre Lachkar, dont les oeuvres sont imprégnées de la mystique juive. Enfin un troisième chant d'espérance est le récit d'un voyage en Israël, qui fut un véritable voyage initiatique. Ces trois chants, allant des ténèbres à la lumière, sont un acte d'amitié profonde pour le peuple juif.
