Chaplaincy And Seafarers written by Helen Sampson and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-18 with Religion categories.

This book explores the faith, work, and lives of port chaplains and seafarers. It draws on archive materials, fieldwork in ports and on cargo ships, and interviews with chaplains in the UK and overseas. The volume presents a detailed picture of seafarers' attitudes to working in mixed faith crews, their understandings of their own faith and its role and negotiation in a life at sea, and their needs with regard to faith and more general welfare support. In addition, it describes the daily life and work of port chaplains, how they understand their roles in relation to their own faith, and how they manage their work in a multi-faith environment. In producing this rich account, the perspectives of relevant stakeholders and the historical underpinnings of port chaplaincy have also been considered, alongside the ways in which port chaplaincy compares with other forms of chaplaincy about which rather more has, hitherto, been known.

One Firm Anchor written by RWH Miller and has been published by Lutterworth Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-25 with Religion categories.

One Firm Anchor is a fantastic introduction to the history of chaplaincy at sea and what preceded it. Miller argues that the fractious period of the Reformation was pivotal: before, there was no formal ministry and only scattered welfare provision for seafarers; afterwards, chaplains were increasingly found at sea, and seafarers became increasingly the recipients of the modern approach to mission. One Firm Anchor adds substantially to the seminal work of Peter F. Anson and Roald Kverndal. Published to coincide with the 2012 International Conference of the Apostleship of the Sea, this is an important new work for all involved in seafaring as well as maritime historians.

The sea has been both a source of bounty and a bridge of communication through the ages. The Way of the Sea explores the unique role of seafarers in promoting the revealed plan of the Creator and Redeemer of both land and sea. As a follow-up to The Seamen’s Mission, Kverndal’s comprehensive survey of maritime mission presents both historical and current perspectives. While The Way of the Sea provides a much-needed tool for the developing field of maritime Missiology, people from all walks of life will learn from the rich history and culture of kingdom-minded seafarers.

The Seafarer’s Mind is a wonderful resource for seafarers. The book is rich in narrative and case studies and covers a wide range of issues and challenges facing sailors on the high seas. A hard hitting account which unpacks the realities of a modern version of indentured labour, the author provides hope in the often harsh world of seafaring. This is a practical guide to living in isolating and confined situations where temptations abound and moral compasses are often abandoned. Martin Otto is the world’s leader in serving seafarers through his international mission work. He is to be commended for being God’s advocate in such an insightful, humble and practical manner. This book will become a widely read text and is sure to become a key reference for all seafarers seeking to live a Godly life in an often harsh and unforgiving environment. I recommend it wholeheartedly. Professor Ross Dowling AM Global Cruise Ship Lecturer Perth, Australia

Strong To Save Maritime Mission In Hong Kong From Whampoa Reach To The Mariners Club written by Stephen Davies and has been published by City University of HK Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-19 with History categories.

Tracing its origins back to 1822 in Whampoa, the Mariners’ Club in Hong Kong was established to meet a specific need for an Anglo-Chinese society defined by that most dubious of activities, seafaring. Its creation was anything but straightforward, and in this can be seen the mutable and often tortuous relations between the various religious bodies, the local population, the transient sailors, the emerging captains of industry, and the growing regulatory reach of the colonial government. The club evolved through many embodiments and witnessed the growth of Hong Kong from a collection of mat-sheds on the foreshore, through colony to its current status. Throughout its turbulent past it has been occasionally marginalized but has always served as an important base for the key actors in the main commercial activity in Hong Kong: seafarers. This is a history of one of the most enduring institutions of Hong Kong, and the first of its kind. Using the Club’s own records as well as a wide range of sources both from within Hong Kong and from the seafaring world at large, this is a comprehensive account of the life of the Missions, the tenancy of the different chaplains, managers, and stewards, the changes in seafaring practices and shipping, and the transformation of Hong Kong itself.

Seventy-one percent of the earth's surface is covered by water and 91 percent of the earth's water is in the oceans of the world. Five hundred years ago, 90 percent of everything people needed was delivered by ship. That figure has not changed. The maritime shipping industry is still delivering the bulk of our daily necessities, such as food, automobiles, clothing, etc. As a port chaplain, I have met scores of men and women who come to our ports from every corner of the earth. They are the driving force of the world's economy. These mariners share their stories with me, and I in turn share the good news of Christ's death, burial, and resurrection with them. The message of the gospel is the greatest story ever told. The maritime minutes shared in this book are gleaned from my personnel experience as the son of a shipbuilder and the grandson of a commercial fisherman, as well as from studying the lives seafarers from ancient times to the present.
