Sur une période de dix-huit mois, il apprendra non seulement la langue maorie, mais aussi l'histoire familiale telle que la racontent le vieux Tiakiwhenua, (surnommé Aki, "gardien de la terre") et sa grand-mère. En plus des histoires individuelles d'Aki, marin et grand voyageur qui épouse une Hawaïenne, et d'Oriwia, qui ne quitte jamais les terres familiales mais devient la femme d'un Japonais déserteur de l'armée, le mystérieux grand-père Chappy, le livre évoque la vie traditionnelle des peuples autochtones du Pacifque et leur grande migration vers les villes avant et après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Epopée familiale, donc, mais aussi document socio-historique, la traduction de ce livre pose la question du transfert de spécificités locales d'une langue, d'une culture à une autre, et ce, à plusieurs niveaux. Comme l'indique Daniel, la trame narrative n'est pas toujours facile à suivre : "je crois que j'ai appris avec ma grand-mère et mon oncle à emprunter des chemins de traverse avant d'arriver au but". Tout comme ce jeune Européen qui cherche son identité en assemblant les morceaux d'un puzzle, le lecteur est invité à construire lui-même un récit cohérent à partir des contributions des deux narrateurs (Aki et Oriwia) qui ne suivent pas nécessairement l'ordre chronologique.
