Excerpt from Life of Goethe, Vol. 1 of 3 There may have been others of clearer understanding, of greater energy, of deeper feelings, or of more vivid imagination, but it is quite certain that there never was an individual in whom all these faculties were united in such striking proportions. And, moreover, there has rarely been an individual of such highly developed powers of soul, whose physical life has so fully retained its independence and has so thoroughly permeated the spiritual. This wonder fully perfect amalgamation of Goethe's nature elevates it to the rank of the extraordinary, and, at the same time, accounts for its seemingly contradictory manifestations. But it is this seeming contradictoriness 1 that has made it so difficult for most people to obtain a correct and adequate idea of him. He observes colour refractions like a physicist, examines bones and ligaments like an anatomist, and comments on bankrupt law like a jurist. Gifted with unusual clearness in the comprehension and analysis of men and things, his early appearance on the stage of action is marked by the wisdom and experience of a man of the world and a diplomat. And yet this same man writes poetry overflowing with imagination, goes about in the real world absorbed in dreams, sees many things and many people, not as they are, but in the light of his own fancy, is frequently incapable of making out a clear, understanding of objects and their mutual relations, and stands in the midst, of human activi ties a naive and often helpless child. This man at one time grasps the world in the warm embrace of a Faust and again he spurns it with the annihilating contempt of a Mephistopheles. The Philosophy of Fine Art is regarded by many as one of the greatest aesthetic theories to have been produced since Aristotle. Hegel's thesis about the historical dissolution of art has been the subject of much scholarly debate. Hegel develops his account of art as a mode of absolute spirit that he calls "the beautiful ideal."

"Systematic Theology" in 3 volumes is one of the best-known works by the American Baptist minister and theologian Augustus Hopkins Strong. This carefully crafted Good Press ebook is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Excerpt: "Under the influence of Ritschl and his Kantian relativism, many of our teachers and preachers have swung off into a practical denial of Christ's deity and of his atonement. We seem upon the verge of a second Unitarian defection that will break up churches and compel secessions, in a worse manner than did that of Channing and Ware a century ago. American Christianity recovered from that disaster only by vigorously asserting the authority of Christ and the inspiration of the Scriptures. We need a new vision of the Savior like that which Paul saw on the way to Damascus and John saw on the isle of Patmos, to convince us that Jesus is lifted above space and time, that his existence antedated creation, that he conducted the march of Hebrew history, that he was born of a virgin, suffered on the cross, rose from the dead, and now lives forevermore, the Lord of the universe, the only God with whom we have to do, our Savior here and our Judge hereafter. Without a revival of this faith our churches will become secularized, mission enterprise will die out, and the candlestick will be removed out of its place as it was with the seven churches of Asia, and as it has been with the apostate churches of New England." Contents: Idea of Theology Method of Theology The Existence of God Origin of Our Idea of God's Existence Corroborative Evidences of God's Existence The Scriptures A Revelation from God The Nature, Decrees, and Works of God The Attributes of God Doctrine of the Trinity The Decrees of God The Works of God Anthropology, Or the Doctrine of Man: The Original State of Man Sin, Or Man's State Of Apostasy Soteriology Christology The Reconciliation of Man to God Ecclesiology, Or the Doctrine of the Church Eschatology...

Modernism Between Benjamin And Goethe written by Matthew Charles and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-12 with Philosophy categories.

Widely regarded as one of the foremost cultural critics of the last century, Walter Benjamin's relation to Modernism has largely been understood in the context of his reception of the aesthetic theories of Early German Romanticism and his associated interest in avant-garde Surrealism. But this Romantic understanding only gives half the picture. Running through Benjamin's thought is also a critique of Romanticism, developed in conjunction with a positive engagement with the philosophical, artistic and historical writings of J. W. von Goethe. In demonstrating the significance of these Goethean elements, this book challenges the dominant understanding of Benjamin's philosophy as essentially Romantic and instead proposes that Goethe's Classicism, conceived as the counterpoint to Romanticism, permits a corrective to the latter's deficiencies. Benjamin's Modernist concept of criticism, it is argued, is constituted in the movement between these polarities of Romanticism and Classicism. Conversely, placing Goethe's Classicism in relation to Benjamin's practice of literary criticism reveals historical tensions with Romanticism that constitute the untimely – indeed, it will be argued, cinematic – Modernism of his work. Adopting a transcritical approach, this book alternates between Benjamin and Goethe in relation to the experiences of colour, language and technology, assembling a constellation of philosophical and artistic figures between them, including the writings of Kant, Nietzsche, Cohen, Deleuze, Koselleck, Klages, and the work of Grünewald, Marées, Klee, Turner, Hulme, Eisenstein, Tretyakov, and Murnau.
