This thesis explores several fundamental topics in mesoscopic circuitries that incorporate few electronic conduction channels. It reports a series of long-awaited experiments that establish a new state of the art. The first experiments address the quantized character of charge in circuits. We demonstrate the charge quantization criterion, observe the predicted charge quantization scaling and a crossover toward a universal behavior as temperature is increased. The second set of experiments addresses the unconventional quantum critical physics that arises in the multichannel Kondo model. We observe the predicted universal Kondo fixed points and validate the numerical renormalization group scaling curves. Away from the quantum critical point, we obtain a direct visualization of the development of a second-order quantum phase transition.

When I was contacted by Kluwer Academic Publishers in the Fall of 200 I, inviting me to edit a volume of papers on the issue of electron transport in quantum dots, I was excited by what I saw as an ideal opportunity to provide an overview of a field of research that has made significant contributions in recent years, both to our understanding of fundamental physics, and to the development of novel nanoelectronic technologies. The need for such a volume seemed to be made more pressing by the fact that few comprehensive reviews of this topic have appeared in the literature, in spite of the vast activity in this area over the course of the last decade or so. With this motivation, I set out to try to compile a volume that would fairly reflect the wide range of opinions that has emerged in the study of electron transport in quantum dots. Indeed, there has been no effort on my part to ensure any consistency between the different chapters, since I would prefer that this volume instead serve as a useful forum for the debate of critical issues in this still developing field. In this matter, I have been assisted greatly by the excellent series of articles provided by the different authors, who are widely recognized as some of the leaders in this vital area of research.

Ongoing developments in nanofabrication technology and the availability of novel materials have led to the emergence and evolution of new topics for mesoscopic research, including scanning-tunnelling microscopic studies of few-atom metallic clusters, discrete energy level spectroscopy, the prediction of Kondo-type physics in the transport properties of quantum dots, time dependent effects, and the properties of interacting systems, e.g. of Luttinger liquids. The overall understanding of each of these areas is still incomplete; nevertheless, with the foundations laid by studies in the more traditional systems there is no doubt that these new areas will advance mesoscopic electron transport to a new phenomenological level, both experimentally and theoretically. Mesoscopic Electron Transport highlights selected areas in the field, provides a comprehensive review of such systems, and also serves as an introduction to the new and developing areas of mesoscopic electron transport.

This provides a major review of the two-level system Kondo model, as applied to metallic glasses, nanoscale devices and some doped semiconductors; and the quadripolar and magnetic two-channel Kondo models developed for rare-earth and actinide ions with crystal splitting metals. These contrast with the simple single-channel model, and allow the study of non-Fermi liquid physics. This book forms a valuable and unique source of information for statistical and condensed matter physicists and graduate students. Key Features: * An invaluable and unique source of information on this highly popular area of condensed matter physics * Based upon a special edition of the Advances in Physics journal * Magnetic impurities in metals present a major challenge to condensed matter physicists, for which a strong starting point has long been the early insights of Kondo into the resistance medium

The International Symposium on the Science and Technology of Mesoscopic Structures was held at Shin-Kohkaido in Nara from November 6-8, 1991. The symposium was sponsored by the International Institute for Advanced Study and partly by Nara Prefecture, Nara City, Nara Convention Bureau, and the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Japan, as well as industrial organizations. We would like to acknowledge the support of the symposium by these or ganizations. The scope of the symposium was planned by the organizing committee to cover outstanding contributors in the fields of (1) ballistic transport, (2) electron wave guides and interference effects, (3) quantum confinement effects, (4) tunneling phenomena, (5) optical nonlinearity, and (6) fabrication technology of meso scopic structures. Twenty-six invited speakers were selected from the United States, Europe, and Japan. In addition twenty-four contributed papers were accepted for presentation at the poster session. These papers are included in the proceedings. We are grateful to the organizing committee, Ms. Y oshiko Kusaki of the Inter national Institute for Advanced Study for the secretarial service, and Dr. Nobuya Mori, Osaka University, for his scientific cooperation. Thanks are also due to the authors and the participants for their contributions to a successful symposium.

Strong Light Matter Coupling written by Leong Chuan Kwek and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-23 with Science categories.

The physics of strong light-matter coupling has been addressed in different scientific communities over the last three decades. Since the early eighties, atoms coupled to optical and microwave cavities have led to pioneering demonstrations of cavity quantum electrodynamics, Gedanken experiments, and building blocks for quantum information processing, for which the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded in 2012. In the framework of semiconducting devices, strong coupling has allowed investigations into the physics of Bose gases in solid-state environments, and the latter holds promise for exploiting light-matter interaction at the single-photon level in scalable architectures. More recently, impressive developments in the so-called superconducting circuit QED have opened another fundamental playground to revisit cavity quantum electrodynamics for practical and fundamental purposes. This book aims at developing the necessary interface between these communities, by providing future researchers with a robust conceptual, theoretical and experimental basis on strong light-matter coupling, both in the classical and in the quantum regimes. In addition, the emphasis is on new forefront research topics currently developed around the physics of strong light-matter interaction in the atomic and solid-state scenarios.
