I would like to present here a collection of 180 pictures taken in the Belgian city of Charleroi during 2019. There are also pictures of the smaller cities of Châtelet, Marchienne-au-Pont and Louvain-la-Neuve.I have had the pleasure of living among the carolos (so are called the inhabitants of Charleroi) during two months in the Spring and Summer of 2019 and I was so delighted by my encounters and experiences, that I decided to publish a collection of photographs, which I hope will constitute a part of their memories in the future. Perhaps in the distant future they will look back at this time and say to themselves: they were interesting humans of a long forgotten age.You will find images of the festivities of the Wallonie, the region of Charleroi, as well as other interesting images of the city, its people, buildings, monuments, bridges, even some animals are shown.It is a pleasure to take pictures of the inhabitants of Charleroi, as they display a welcoming and relaxed character. You will see many smiles here, many interesting moments. I particularly like the moment I captured of one little girl: She is reading avidly a comic strip...with her doll aside, looking as if dead. I would call this picture Death of a Doll, in the sense that the girl is quickly loosing interest in the doll to grow up and to become a child interested in another type of fantasy, comic strips. When a girl looses interest in her doll, this one will loose her voice and begin to die, metaphorically speaking.I also have to thank the people that appear on this book and that allowed me to photographed them. It speaks volumes of their good nature and strong personality, that they accepted to be photographed by a complete stranger like me. I hope that I have honoured their trust by capturing their good personalities... perhaps for the future generations. That is my wish in any case.You will also find The Giants of Charleroi, people singing, people dancing, wonderful artists performing, musicians, bikers, cyclists, industrial plants, new and old buildings...The book also contains many examples of interesting graffiti, which I found relevant and worth preserving by means of photographs.I hope that you will enjoy this image-travel to Charleroi and perhaps encourage you to visit the city in the future, together with this welcoming country, Belgium.

For a quarter of a century the industrial Western world has been living in the euphoria of continuous improvements in welfare, based on economic programming, increasing integration and terms of trade which favor indus trial countries and discriminate against agricultural regions. It is true that recessions have periodically recurred during these years : time and again, however, government intervention succeeded in reducing them to mere "in ventory cycles". In contrast with the twenties and thirties, when economic policy in the West focused on fighting unemployment and stimulating investment, the postwar period has been characterized by a permanent concern to curb inflationary pressure, which was partly due to full-employ ment. The present welfare economy has given rise to a growth of the pro pensity to consume such that public policy has often been constrained to limit consumption and stimulate saving. In this new framework it has perhaps been forgotten that today's welfare owes much to the lessons from the past. The bitter world crisis experience of the thirties in particular has exerted a fruitful and decisive influence upon the search for means to prevent, eliminate or soften the cyclical fluctuations which the process of economic growth involves. Forty years after the out break of the greatest economic crisis ever, it seems useful to draw up the balancesheet of the lessons learned from it. There exists a large literature about the depression of the thirties.

The opening month of the Great War ending in the Battle of the Marne (6-9 September 1914) was a turning point in modern history. The French and British armies were forced into a long retreat from Belgium but subsequently regrouped to mount a successful counter-attack. However, the miracle of the Marne, as it was later called, ended in the stalemate of the trenches. The failure of the Imperial German Army to achieve a decisive victory led to thirty years of hostility, warfare and destruction, which cost millions of lives. During the retreat to the Marne over a million soldiers marched 20 miles a day carrying 60-lb packs in temperatures above 30 degrees. They were often short of food and only managed short snatches of rest. They fought a series of engagements over two weeks which ended in a battle from the plains of Lorraine to the gates of Paris. This march tested them to the limits of endurance and beyond. In this book Terry Cudbird recreates the experience of the infantry during their gruelling journey. He describes his own August walk from southern Belgium to the battlefield, which followed the exact route taken by a French Lieutenant in the Fifth Army. He draws on a wide range of personal reminiscences, not only French but also British and German. He takes us back to the landscapes of Northern France in 1914 and explains how they have changed since that August one hundred years ago. He also reflects on the soldiers' origins and training, and their morale as they set out. This is not another military history but a unique evocation of the powers of endurance of ordinary soldiers. It will appeal to those interested in the history of the Great War, including readers who want to explore the route of the retreat for themselves.

Saurman recalls being mentored by his grandfather, who taught the importance of living life according to the Ten Commandments and the Book of Proverbs. He also shares what it was like growing up as a boy in the 1930s and early 1940s. With the arrival of World War II, he joined the Army and eventually went to basic infantry training. He served in the infantry for the duration of the war. Hed have the great fortune to meet his future wife, Mary Elizabeth Ewen, at Ursinus College. They enjoyed a sixty-two year marriage and raised a wonderful family, and she supported him throughout his career as a businessman, borough councilman, as mayor of Ambler, and during his fourteen years as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
