Mirroring Evil written by Jewish Museum (New York, N.Y.) and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Art categories.

Mirroring Evil: Nazi Imagery/Recent Art features the work by thirteen internationally recognized artists who use imagery from the Nazi era to explore the nature of evil. Their works are a radical departure from previous art about the Holocaust, which centered on tragic images of victims. Instead, these artists dare to invite the viewer into the world of the perpetrators. The viewer, therefore, faces an unsettling moral dilemma: How is one to react to these menacing and indicting images, drawn from a history that can never be forgotten? The artists represented in Mirroring Evil impel us to examine what these images of Nazism might mean in our lives today. Essays in the catalogue explore themes of moral ambiguity in makers and viewers of art, institutional responsibility in exhibiting controversial artworks, and the complicated issues of representing or even imagining the perpetrators. Entries about the individual artworks discuss in greater depth the artistic, ethical, and historical complexity of the images that the artists dare to engage.

Painted Clay written by Paul Scott and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Art categories.

"In Painted Clay, Paul Scott proposes an alternative version of ceramic history ... one where form and function are not dominant, but where painting and the graphic development of ceramic surface are the prime concerns. Covering a range from pre-Dynastic Egyptian painting on pots, through Chinese porcelain, Persian Minai ware and Maiolica to the blue and white of the industrialized West, he charts the development of increasingly sophisticated painted and graphic works." "The book takes an extensive overview of today's contemporary (graphic) ceramic scene, and the figures and movements that have influenced it. In exploring the use "painters" such as Picasso, Miro, the CoBrA Group, Conrad Atkinson, and others have made of ceramics, it also examines the relationships artists have had with the pottery industry, from Soviet Revolutionary Propaganda ware to collaborations at the Wedgwood Pottery company. It highlights a wide range of work by contemporary ceramic artists, painters, and printmakers from around the world: Ann Kraus, Cindy Kolodziejski, Eric Mellon, Grayson Perry, and many others." "This book should appeal to anyone interested in ceramics, as well as to painters, printmakers, graphic artists, and all those generally interested in the visual arts."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Psychiatry written by Konstantinos N. Fountoulakis and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-26 with Medical categories.

This book was the end product of life experiences, thoughts and intellectual wanderings of the author, who through his career and for the last twenty years was always serving all the three aspects of a Psychiatrist: He is a clinician, a researcher and an academic teacher. The book includes a comprehensive history of Psychiatry since antiquity and until today, with an emphasis not only on main events but also specifically and with much detail and explanations, on the chain of events that led to a particular development. At the center of this work is the question ‘What is mental illness?’ and ‘Does free will exist?’. These are questions which tantalize Psychiatrists, neuroscientists, psychologists, philosophers, patients and their families and the sensitive and educated lay persons alike. Thus, the book includes a comprehensive review and systematic elaboration on the definition and the concept of mental illness, a detailed discussion on the issue of free will as well as the state of the art of contemporary Psychiatry and the socio-political currents it has provoked. Finally the book includes a description of the academic, social and professional status of Psychiatry and Psychiatrists and a view of future needs and possible developments. A last moment addition was the chapter on conspiracy theories, as a consequence of the experience with the social media and the public response to the COVID-19 outbreak which coincided with the final stage of the preparation of the book. Their study is an excellent opportunity to dig deep into the relation among human psychology, mental health, the society and politics and to swim in intellectually dangerous waters.

Today our fatigue feels chronic; our anxieties, amplified. Proliferating technologies command our attention. Many people complain of burnout, and economic instability and the threat of ecological catastrophe fill us with dread. We look to the past, imagining life to have once been simpler and slower, but extreme mental and physical stress is not a modern syndrome. Beginning in classical antiquity, this book demonstrates how exhaustion has always been with us and helps us evaluate more critically the narratives we tell ourselves about the phenomenon. Medical, cultural, literary, and biographical sources have cast exhaustion as a biochemical imbalance, a somatic ailment, a viral disease, and a spiritual failing. It has been linked to loss, the alignment of the planets, a perverse desire for death, and social and economic disruption. Pathologized, demonized, sexualized, and even weaponized, exhaustion unites the mind with the body and society in such a way that we attach larger questions of agency, willpower, and well-being to its symptoms. Mapping these political, ideological, and creative currents across centuries of human development, Exhaustion finds in our struggle to overcome weariness a more significant effort to master ourselves.
