Excerpt from Charterhouse It is hoped that present Carthusians may find this slight account ofa momentous period in the history of Charterhouse not devoid of interest, and that parents who are choosing a school for their sons may gather from the following chapters a little more guidance about the life of the school than can be furnished by its printed regulations. Excerpt from Chronicles of Charter House Aloof from the mercantile and fashionable world, on the "thirteen acres and one rod of land" which Sir Walter de Manny devoted to the pious purpose of interring the bodies of the dead, stands the Hospital of King James, the bountiful work of one individual, the ever-memorable Thomas Sutton. For a time has this spot, endeared to the recollection= of so many, been without a Chronicler, to point out its eventful history to those who are now sharing the benefits of its protection, or to awaken in the breasts of those who have gone forth from its walls, the kindly feelings with which all are apt to contemplate the place where their 2 early years have been spent. It is true, that able and worthy Antiquaries, in times when archaeological pursuits were but rarely followed, inquired into its institution: on their anterior Histories, more especially those of Bearcroft and Heme, this attempt is principally grounded. The Author has, however, laboured diligently to collect whatever could contribute to illustrate the subject, and has been enabled to glean much additional information; still there lies open a wide field of inquiry, which, for his own satisfaction, if not for that of the public, he hopes erelong to explore. Excerpt from Charterhouse in London: Monastery, Mansion, Hospital, School To the advantages which I have recorded, and of which I fear I shall have made but an inadequate use, must be added that of having survived into a day when the unearthing of much entirely fresh material has enabled us to explain much which before was inexplicable, and to set right a great many errors into which the earlier writers, for lack of this material, inevitably fell. It may well be that the discovery of further material in the Record Office or elsewhere will fill many a gap which I have had to leave, and will add my own name to the list of those whose histories need correction. I have made it my endeavour to state nothing in positive terms for which I have not found authority. It would be impossible always to quote that authority without cumbering the page with footnotes. I have been careful also to try and give to such words as undoubtedly, probably, possibly, their exact value in the scale, and where mere suggestion is used to let it be clearly seen as such. I cannot hope that I have fallen into no errors of my own, after correcting the errors of those that have gone before me. I can only claim that I have taken pains to avoid them. In writing the records of a place which in some shape has touched history either in the lives which were being lived within it, or in the lives of those that went forth from it on almost every day of its existence since 1349, it is inevitable that some mistakes will have crept in, certainly inevitable that many and many an interest should have been left out. Excerpt from Charterhouse Register: 1872-1900 A list of the names of all Carthusians who entered the School between the years 1800 and 1879, together with some account of their careers, was published in 1879 by the Rev. W. D. Parish. The New Register contains a list of all who have been in the School between June 18, 1872 - the date of its removal to Godalming - and the end of 1900. Their number is 4,321; a full record is given of 4,098 of these, and an incomplete record of some fifty more. For this approximation to completeness we express our cordial thanks to those who have aided us in a long and laborious task. We earnestly hope that any who detect inaccuracies and omissions will communicate them. That there must be inaccuracies and omissions we know; but we have done our best to guard against these by forwarding his own entry, together with a request for corrections, to everyone whose name appears in the Register. It has not been practicable to state Fathers' names, or School Forms, or Marriages, or to insert all the Athletic distinctions which have been forwarded for publication. Excerpt from The Registers and Monumental Inscriptions of Charterhouse Chapel The earliest Register of Charterhouse Chapel contains entries of Marriages from 1671 to 1754; of Baptisms from 1695 to 1812; and of Burials from 1695 to 1812. There are also in it a few memoranda of more or less genealogical interest, and entries of two Marriages solemnized respectively in 1837 and 1839. There are four other volumes of Registers. One containing Baptisms from 1813 to the present time, and in this there is an entry of a Marriage solemnized in 1837. In another volume, labelled Marriages, there is only one entry, viz., in 1839. A third is a Register of all Marriages from 1857 to the present time. And the fourth contains all the Burials from 1813 to 1854, when the Burial-ground in Charterhouse was closed. In this Register there are also some later entries relating, chiefly, to the burials of the Poor Brothers who, for the most part, were interred in Bow Cemetery. A set of Marriage Licences, the earliest of which is dated 1671 and the latest 1754, has been collected and bound up in two volumes, forming a valuable addition to the earliest Register. On one of the fly-leaves of the earliest Register is the following: - "Memorandum. June 24th, 1702. There was given to the Charterhouse Chappell to be used at the Altar One fine wrought Silver Cup, Double Gilt, with a cover of fine wrought flowered work to it, by Mr. Edward Hooker, Student in Physick, Pensioner of the House." "It is stated in Smythe's 'History of Charterhouse, ' published 1808, that this benefaction was stolen, with other valuables, from the Charterhouse Chapel, in the night of the 4th of September 1797.
