We live in a secular age, or so we have been told. Nevertheless, the Christian church strongly believes that we still experience--and in fact are surrounded by--acts of transcendence, encounters with God that often defy imagination and explanation. And yet we do try to explain such phenomena, whether theologically, experientially, biblically, historically, philosophically, literarily, or even (or especially) artistically. These two volumes are more than just papers from a major conference on secularism and the pursuit of transcendence held at McMaster Divinity College in Hamilton, Ontario. They contain genuine attempts by people deeply engaged with their secular surroundings to explain what we mean by transcendence. Transcendence has been a longstanding topic among the best thinkers of this and previous ages, and the same is true for these volumes, which include contributions by Charles Taylor, Robert Wuthnow, Merold Westphal, and Christina Gschwandtner--but also by a wide range of others who address the question from divergent vantage points. The responses vary as much as the orientations of those involved, in the pursuit of defining not only what it means to live in our secular age but to be involved in the pursuit of transcendence--or even to perceive the Transcendent's pursuit of us.

Why bother with God when he is viewed as a sacred superstition, a discarded non-entity, or a pretext for religious wars? Jews and Christians have doubted and discarded God at many times throughout the ages, and have also justified countless conflicts in his name. Their history, however, tells a different story. Here we observe the historical reality of God’s relentless quest to relate with people, whether Jew or gentile. Despite significant differences between these communities, this is the DNA that binds them and places them in a paradigm different from the one articulated in The Quest: Christ Amidst the Quest, where people are seeking to be freed from their predicament. The Judeo-Christian narrative shows God’s incessant quest orchestrated through various channels, such as scriptural revelation, miraculous interventions, covenantal commitments, divine presence in the tabernacle or the temple, God’s sacrificial incarnation in Christ, and the advent of the anticipated Jewish Messiah. The narrative climaxes in a grand finale when humans and their habitat will be ushered into an age of peace and harmony. Journeying through such a narrative will provide assurance that God is walking with you amidst life’s turmoil, and that the best is yet to be.

This book considers the problem of ecological degradation from the perspective of a Christian clergyman and hunter. Drawing on the tradition of Christian mysticism, the author offers a series of meditations on various aspects of the natural world, including oceans and prairies, weather patterns, the changing of seasons, animal and plant communities, and the ways humans engage with them. He sees the intellectual and spiritual roots of the modern ecological crisis in a turn of thought coming from the Enlightenment that makes the value of the natural world a function of its utility, and he offers a way out that is centered in prayer and humility.

Lyra Daniels is dead. Okay, so I only died for sixty-six seconds. But when I came back to life, I got a brand new name and a snazzy new uniform. Go me! Seriously, though, it's very important that Lyra Daniels stays dead, at least as far as my ex-friend Jarren, the murdering looter, knows. While dying is the scariest thing that's happened to me, it morphed my worming skills. I can manipulate the Q-net like never before. But Jarren has blocked us from communicating with the rest of the galaxy and now they believe we've gone silent, like Planet Xinji (where silent really means dead). A Protector Class spaceship is coming to our rescue, but we still have to survive almost two years until they arrive - if they arrive at all. Until then, we have to figure out how to stop an unstoppable alien threat. And it's only a matter of time before Jarren learns I'm not dead and returns to finish what he started. There's no way I'm going to let Jarren win. Instead I'll do whatever it takes to save the people I love. But even I'm running out of ideas... The Shadow Network is a story inspired by the countless battles fought, both visible and invisible, by those who strive for justice in an often unjust world. It is a tale that explores the delicate balance between light and darkness, where every decision has a consequence, and where the quest for truth comes at a steep price. The idea for this story came from a simple but powerful question: What happens when the lines between good and evil blur so completely that even the most well-intentioned must question their own morality? What happens when the institutions we trust most are corrupted from within, and the very fabric of society is threatened by those who hide in the shadows? Adrian, the protagonist, embodies the struggle between personal vengeance and the broader, more noble fight for justice. His journey is not just physical—facing adversaries, solving mysteries, and uncovering dark secrets—but emotional and psychological as well. It’s about understanding the depth of human nature: how pain can drive one toward destruction, but also how resilience can lead to redemption. This story, like any tale of this nature, is both a reflection of our world and a departure from it. While the conspiracy at the heart of the plot may feel fictional, the themes explored are all too real. In a world where power often goes unchecked and corruption lurks behind every corner, it’s easy to feel as though the fight for truth is futile. But it is in these moments of darkness that true heroes emerge, not necessarily those who wear capes, but those who choose to stand up and face the overwhelming odds. The Shadow Network is more than just an action-packed thriller; it’s a meditation on the human condition, on loyalty, trust, betrayal, and the unrelenting pursuit of justice. It is about discovering strength in the face of adversity, questioning everything we know, and, ultimately, finding light even when it seems impossible. To those who have ever felt powerless against the forces that govern the world, this story is for you. To those who have fought in the shadows to right a wrong, this story is for you. And to those who believe that hope, no matter how fleeting, can change the world, this story is for you. As you turn these pages, may you find inspiration in the characters' resilience, and may you be reminded that no matter how dark the world may seem, there is always a fight worth fighting. Welcome to The Shadow Network.
