While scholars have long explored connections between Chaucer and Boccaccio, relatively few have asked why Chaucer makes such a habit of obscuring the influence of his favourite vernacular author. Tropes of Engagement asks the question of what motivated Chaucer to camouflage his debt to his most prominent, yet never named, Italian source: Giovanni Boccaccio. Leah Schwebel boldly claims that when Chaucer erases Boccaccio, he is mimicking strategies of translation practiced by his classical and continental predecessors. Tracing popular narratives from antiquity to the late Middle Ages, including the Knight’s Tale, the Clerk’s Tale, the Monk’s Tale, Troilus and Criseyde, and Lydgate’s Fall of Princes and Troy Book, Schwebel argues that authorial erasure, invention, and manipulation are recognizable literary tropes of engagement that poets employ to suggest their connection to, and place within, a broader authorial tradition. Combining an attention to the cultural, historical, and material circumstances surrounding literary production with a mode of source study that looks beyond discernable influence, Tropes of Engagement recognizes authors self-consciously erasing and misreading each other as part of a process of mutual and self-promotion.

When Chaucer came into contact with Italian literary culture in the second half of the fourteenth century he was engaging with a productive, lively and highly varied tradition. Chaucer and Italian Textuality provides a new perspective on Chaucer and Italy by highlighting the materiality of his sources, reconstructing his textual, codicological horizon of expectation. It provides new ways of thinking about Chaucer's access to, and use of, these Italian sources, stimulating, in turn, new ways of reading his work. Manuscripts of the major works of Dante, Boccaccio, and Petrarch circulated in a variety of formats, and often the margins of their texts were loci for extensive commentary and glossing. These traditions of glossing and commentary represent one of the most striking features of fourteenth-century Italian literary culture. These authors were in turn deeply indebted to figures like Ovid and Statius, who were themselves heavily glossed and commented upon. The margins provided a space for a wide variety of responses to be inscribed on the page. This is eloquently demonstrated in the example of Francesco d'Amaretto Mannelli's glosses in Decameron, copied by him in 1384. This material dimension of Chaucer's sources has not received sufficient attention; this book aims to address just such a material textuality. This attention to the materiality of Chaucer's sources is further explored and developed by reading the Prologue to the Wife of Bath's Tale and the Clerk's Tale through their early fourteenth-century manuscripts, taking account not just of the text but also of the numerous marginal glosses. Within this context, then, the question of Chaucer's authorship of some of these glosses is considered.

Re-telling Old Stories situates Chaucer within a classical and Italian tradition of intertextuality. By looking beyond Chaucer’s immediate textual models to how his authors are themselves using and translating literary works, I demonstrate that much of what we have attributed to Chaucer’s desire to appear erudite—particularly his frequent occlusion of his vernacular model, Boccaccio—instead shows him manipulating strategies of authorial engagement deriving from antiquity. Crucially, these strategies are not anxious responses to poetic influence, motivated by fear of similarity or, worse, inferiority, as Harold Bloom might argue. Rather, they indicate Chaucer’s playful engagement with his precursors on their own terms, and in the anticipation of similar treatment at the hands of later poets. Focusing on three of the Canterbury Tales, the Knight’s Tale, the Clerk’s Tale, and the Monk’s Tale, I demonstrate that Chaucer models his treatment of his authors on their own strategies of intertextual play. My chapter on the Knight’s Tale locates Chaucer’s erasure of Boccaccio within an extensive tradition of poets who all occlude their literary models. My chapter on the Clerk’s Tale also places Chaucer’s work within a larger, literary tradition. In this case, I show that Chaucer reiterates a strategy of subversive translation that he learns from Petrarch’s Latin redaction of Decameron X.10, the Insignis obedientia et fides uxoria. Finally, my chapter on the Monk’s Tale excavates a tradition of triumphal poetry from antiquity to the Middle Ages, a tradition that includes Chaucer’s source for the work, the De casibus itself. On one level, then, my dissertation uncovers networks of intertextual commentary that have heretofore remained unrecognized. But on a larger, theoretical level, what my dissertation offers is the notion that authors echo one another in ways that are not always evident, and that in fact remain hidden unless we look beyond a work’s immediate sources to the traditions informing it. What we find in doing so is that intertextual engagement goes beyond mere imitation, and can include the erasure and manipulation of previous works. Nevertheless, even when it takes these forms, intertextual engagement can be used to create authorial genealogies, canonicity, even fame itself.
