Under the widespread concept of integrated pest management, use of semiochemicals have been extensively studied to control agricultural pest insects. In this regard, aphrodisiac pheromones of two most destructive pest species of Pieris have been investigated. Individual pheromone constituents produced in the wings of two Asian populations were compared with two European populations of P. rapae. The total pheromone levels in the European populations were lower than the amounts present in wings of Asian populations. As a result of this study, we can conclude that both the subspecies of P. rapae showed a clear variation in pheromone profile between them. On the other hand, within subspecies, the different populations did not show very large differences. Therefore, the populations with geographical difference could not be considered identical as they showed significant quantitative differences in pheromone profiles. Furthermore, Electroantennographic analysis was also carried out to find out specific pheromone lures, which could be used for both the subspecies to carried out field bioassays in future, to test the mating disruption strategy.

This thesis presents the major viruses affecting three cultivars in Colombia and how experimental approaches in serology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics can be adapted to create a protocol that could be applied for physalis, passionfruit, ornamental rose, and eventually other crops. Selection of farms was carried out based on size and economic importance. Initial visual plant symptom appraisal led collection of 370 samples from 20 farms. Literature review guided the selection of antibodies of known viruses for initial ELISA testing. Thereafter NGS was carried out to discover further known and novel viruses in the cultivars. Various experiments were carried out on different samples including biotest inoculation, ELISA, RT-PCR, and NGS. Reliable and practical diagnostic tools like these could be developed for the most important viruses leading to a national agricultural certification program that could be established in a common project between German and Colombian universities, the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA), the Colombian Corporation of Agricultural Investigation (AGROSAVIA), and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). In dieser Arbeit werden die wichtigsten Viren vorgestellt, die drei Sorten in Kolumbien betreffen, und wie experimentelle Ansätze in den Bereichen Serologie, Molekularbiologie und Bioinformatik angepasst werden können, um ein Protokoll zu erstellen, das für Physalis, Passionsfrucht, Zierrose und eventuell andere Kulturen angewendet werden kann. Die Auswahl der Betriebe erfolgte nach Größe und wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung. Die erste visuelle Beurteilung der Pflanzensymptome führte zur Entnahme von 370 Proben aus 20 Betrieben. Die Literaturrecherche leitete die Auswahl von Antikörpern bekannter Viren für erste ELISA-Tests. Danach wurde NGS durchgeführt, um weitere bekannte und neuartige Viren in den Sorten zu entdecken. Verschiedene Experimente wurden an verschiedenen Proben durchgeführt, einschließlich Biotest-Inokulation, ELISA, RT-PCR und NGS. Merian raised insects for five decades, recording the food plants, behavior and ecology of roughly 300 species. Her most influential invention was an 'ecological' composition in which the metamorphic cycles of insects (usually moths and butterflies) were arrayed around plants that served as food for the caterpillars. Kay Etheridge analyzes the 1679 caterpillar book from the viewpoint of a biologist, arguing that Merian's study of insect interactions with plants, the first of its kind, was a formative contribution to natural history.

Half of all insect species are dependent on living plant tissues, consuming about 10% of plant annual production in natural habitats and an even greater percentage in agricultural systems, despite sophisticated control measures. Plants possess defences that are effective against almost all herbivorous insect species. Host-plant specialization, observed in over 80% of these animals, appears to be an effective adaptation to breach these defence systems. The mechanisms underlying plant defence to invading herbivores on the one side, and insect adaptations to utilize plants for nutrition, defence and shelter on the other, are the main subjects of this book. In the case of plants exposed to insect herbivores, they include the activation of defence systems in order to minimize damage, as well as the emission of chemical signals that may attract natural enemies of the invading herbivores and may be exploited by neighbouring plants that mount defences as well. For insects, they include complex bevioural adaptations and their underlying sensory systems (with their implications for learning and nutritional plasticity), as well as the endocrinological aspects of life cycle synchronization with host-plant phenology. Insect-Plant Biology discusses the operation of these mechanisms at the molecular and organismal levels and explicitly puts these in the context of both ecological interactions and evolutionary processes.
