This program focused on fundamental investigations of mixing, chemical-reaction, and combustion processes, in turbulent, subsonic, and supersonic free-shear flows. The program was comprised of an experimental effort; an analytical, modeling, and computational effort; and a diagnostics, instrumentation, and data-acquisition-development effort, with significant progress in each. With regard to gas-phase shear-layer mixing and combustion, effects of inflow/initial conditions, compressibility, and Reynolds number were experimentally investigated and, to a large extent, clarified. New measures to characterize level sets in turbulence were developed and successfully employed to characterize experimental data of liquid-phase turbulent-jet flows as well as three-dimensional direct-numerical-simulation data of Rayleigh-Taylor-instability flows. The computational effort has added to our understanding of the (H2+NO)/F2 chemical system employed in the shear-layer-mixing investigations as well as mixing in high-speed flows, along with further developments in Riemann-Invariant-Manifold gasdynamic simulation techniques and their application to unsteady detonation phenomena. On the diagnostic front, developments in digital imaging and Image Correlation Velocimetry have continued, and been used to investigate turbulent-jet mixing, the unsteady flow over an accelerating airfoil, to mitigate aliasing problems in the computer reconstruction of (2+1)-dimensional isosurface data, and in other applications.

Turbulence, mixing and the mutual interaction of turbulence and chemistry continue to remain perplexing and impregnable in the fron tiers of fluid mechanics. The past ten years have brought enormous advances in computers and computational techniques on the one hand and in measurements and data processing on the other. The impact of such capabilities has led to a revolution both in the understanding of the structure of turbulence as well as in the predictive methods for application in technology. The early ideas on turbulence being an array of complicated phenomena and having some form of reasonably strong coherent struc ture have become well substantiated in recent experimental work. We are still at the very beginning of understanding all of the aspects of such coherence and of the possibilities of incorporating such structure into the analytical models for even those cases where the thin shear layer approximation may be valid. Nevertheless a distinguished body of "eddy chasers" has come into existence. The structure of mixing layers which has been studied for some years in terms of correlations and spectral analysis is also getting better understood. Both probability concepts such as intermittency and conditional sampling as well as the concept of large scale structure and the associated strain seem to indicate possibilities of distinguishing and synthesizing 'engulfment' and molecular mixing.

Work is continuing in both gas phase and liquid phase turbulent mixing and chemical reactions. In the gas phase shear layer work, our investigations are concentrating on shear layer free stream density ratio effects, finite kinetic rate (Damkohler number) effects, and heat release effects the latter up to a temperature rise in the combustion zone of the order of 1,000K. In jet flows, the development of laser Rayleigh scattering techniques is progressing towards conserved scalar measurements down to diffusion space and time scales. In the liquid phase work, laser induced fluorescence measurements in both shear layer and jet flows have yielded considerable new information on the mixing process and statistics, permitting direct estimates as the probability density function in both cases. Theoretical work in progress is addressing the finite chemical rate problem as well as the diffusion limited shear layer mixing problem. Keywords: Turbulence; Flame; Damkohler number; Shear Layer; Jet Combustion.

Fast Chemical Reactions In Turbulent Flows written by Rustam Ya Deberdeev and has been published by Smithers Rapra this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-02 with Science categories.

This book describes the fundamentals of fast liquid-phase chemical reactions and the principles of their scientific foundation, technical implementation and industrial application of new technologies. In addition, the equipment required to perform these reactions, in a turbulent mode in the chemical, petrochemical and petroleum industries, is also discussed. The macrokinetic approach has been developed with consideration of the diffusion, hydrodynamics, and heat transfer processes. Due to the advancement of fundamental knowledge, equations of practical engineering importance have been obtained for the calculations of mass and heat transfer processes carried out in conditions of high turbulence, and developed for the implementation in fast chemical reactions involving the synthesis of low molecular weight products and polymers. New methods for controlling the molecular characteristics of polymers have been developed based on the tailored regulation of the hydrodynamics of the reactive mixture flow. Typical processes have been used as model examples to reveal the influence of turbulence on the behaviour of fast chemical reactions used for the synthesis of low molecular weight products, in single-phase and two-phase reactive systems. Brand new tubular devices have been developed with the following characteristics: compact size, high productivity, and a quasi-perfect mixing operation mode in turbulent flows. These devices are subdivided into cylindrical, shell-and-tube, 'zone', and diffuser-confusor designs. Original solutions are proposed for the instrumental implementation of fast liquid-phase processes and development of continuous energy- and resource-efficient technologies for the synthesis of some large-scale compounds.

Work under this contract has proceeded along three main lines, an experimental program covering low heat release combustion of hydrogen and fluorine, and chemically reacting turbulent shear layers and jets in water, a theoretical model development program whose aim is to provide alternatives to gradient diffusion transport models, and a diagnostics development parallel program to advance the state-of-the-art in experimental techniques, as dictated by our main experimental effort. Substantial progress has been made in all three areas. Notably, in the experimental program, we have completed a first set of measurements in our H2 + F2 combustion facility, as well as laser induced fluorescence measurements of chemically reacting jets and shear layers in water. These experiments prove conclusively that gradient transport models are inappropriate in describing these flows. In the theoretical area, we have shown good agreement between a simple mixing model, developed under this contract sponsorship, and our measurements. In the diagnostics area, important advances have been made in laser Doppler velocimeter, high speed thermometry, laser induced fluorescence and others.

Effects Of Turbulent Mixing On Chemical Reaction In An Aerosol Producing Co Flow Jet written by Thomas Paris Jenkins and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Aerosols categories.

Investigates the effects of mixing on chemical reaction in a turbulent co-flow jet. After a jet is produced by a mixture of HCl (hydrogen chloride), air, and N2 (nitrogen) issuing from a pipe into a co-flowing stream of NH3 (gaseous ammonia) and air, a chemical reaction in which NH4Cl (ammonium chloride) aerosol with negligible heat release is produced. The product concentration field as marked by the aerosol is then characterized through the collection of data from which probability density functions can be constructed.
