Fils de réfugiés espagnols, le nom de Franco a résonné dans mon corps d'enfant durant de longues années d'exil. Mais c'est uniquement au crépuscule de leur vie que mon père et ma mère ont accepté d'ouvrir leur mémoire au public. J'ai passé de longs mois à les écouter, écrire, lire et relire avec eux cette banale et en même temps extraordinaire épopée démarrée en 1933 dans un village de la province de Teruel, pour se terminer en 1945 dans le Berry. Ces témoignages de libertaires, acteurs et prisonniers de la tourmente de l'histoire, loin de s'inscrire dans un quelconque mythe fait ressurgir le vécu de gens simples qui n'ont jamais désespéré du combat pour la vie. On nous dira qu'il s'agit d'une vérité partiale et partielle sur la guerre d'Espagne et l'exil en France. Bien sûr. Il y a autant d'histoires que de subjectivités. Pourtant guidé par une rigueur intellectuelle partagée, nous n'avons rien édulcoré, rien caché des bonheurs et des déshonneurs d'une révolution ainsi que des infamies et des grandeurs d'une terre d'accueil... Ce travail en profondeur qui exhuma des sentiments enfouis sinon refoulés, exprimés avec des mots, souvent avec des soupirs, et parfois des larmes, transforma un récit familial en histoire chargée de valeurs humaines universelles.

La bibliografía sobre la Guerra Civil no ha cesado de aumentar, ni dentro ni fuera de España. Esta tendencia se observa desde hace varios años y nada hace pensar que vaya a disminuir en los próximos. En 2016 el número de publicaciones se habrá incrementado, pues no en vano se cumple el octogésimo aniversario del comienzo del conflicto. Los años entre 2016 y 2019 se perfilan como un período en el que los interesados en lo que parece ser un tema inagotable centrarán una parte sustancial de sus investigaciones. Y esto con independencia de que el mercado no siempre se muestre tan acogedor como antes de la larga crisis económica que sufre, entre otros países, España. Este libro no trata de hacer un inventario más o menos completo de todo lo editado sobre la Guerra Civil, eso hubiera sido una tarea quimérica. Es imposible que transcurra una semana sin que se publique algún libro y no es infrecuente que aparezcan varios. Se trata de ofrecer a los lectores una orientación valorativa. Los autores han tenido total libertad para seleccionar aquellos títulos que han querido comentar y para descartar los que no les han parecido tan interesantes o que, por cualesquiera otras razones, no han deseado incluir. Hay títulos que, siendo susceptibles de enfoques varios, aparecen no en uno sino en varios artículos. No lo hemos impedido, y sí alentado, porque implícitamente con ello ofrecemos al lector dos o más formas de enfocar un mismo libro.

This bilingual collection illustrates the concept of the 'Warrior of the Imaginary', as defined by Patrick Chamoiseau, in a multi-faceted corpus of texts. Francophone contributions explore the role of the Caribbean writer in works by Chamoiseau, Édouard Glissant, Daniel Maximin, and Joseph Zobel. Essays in English focus not only on familiar writers (Dionne Brand, Edwidge Danticat, Wilson Harris, Jamaica Kincaid, Caryl Phillips, Derek Walcott) but also on less widely studied voices (Robert Antoni, Albert Helman). Other contributions deal with such 'fighting areas' as Afro-Brazilian music, film, and Mutabaruka's militant poetry. The whole testifies to a surprisingly coherent imaginary, one that goes beyond the 'balkanization' of the Caribbean archipelago. Dans ce collectif bilingue, le concept de 'Guerrier de l'imaginaire' tel que défini par Patrick Chamoiseau est illustré par un corpus de textes variés. Plusieurs des articles en français engagent directement le cycle romanesque de l'auteur martiniquais, d'autres étendent l'interrogation de la fonction de l'auteur caribéen à l'écriture glissantienne, maximinienne et zobélienne. Études en anglais portent sur des écrivains dont le renom n'est plus à faire (Dionne Brand, Edwidge Danticat, Wilson Harris, Jamaica Kincaid, Caryl Phillips, Derek Walcott) mais donnent aussi la parole à des auteurs jusqu'à présent moins étudiés (Robert Antoni, Albert Helman). The essays in Shadows in the City of Light explore the significance of Paris in the writing of five influential French writers—Sarah Kofman, Patrick Modiano, George Perec, Henri Raczymow, and Irene Nemirovsky—whose novels and memoirs capture and probe the absences of deported Paris Jews. These writers move their readers through wartime and postwar cityscapes of Paris, walking them through streets and arrondissments where Jews once resided, looking for traces of the disappeared.
