Through an analysis of the discourse practices of populist Far Right groups in France, Italy and Belgian Flanders, this book makes a ground-breaking contribution to our understanding of the ways in which homophobic discourse functions. It proposes an innovative heuristic for the conceiving of the interplay of language, context and culture: discourse ecology. The author brings linguistic theories, methods and ways of understanding and thinking about language to a study of the overt and covert homophobic discourses of three non-Anglophone populist movements, and grounds the interpretation of such practices in observable data. A study of how violence and language affect women in Italy. Can the way a word is used give legitimacy to a political movement? Feminism, Violence, and Representation in Modern Italy traces the use of the word “femminicidio” (or “femicide”) as a tool to mobilize Italian feminists, particularly the Union of Women in Italy (UDI). Based on nearly two years of fieldwork among feminist activists, Giovanna Parmigiani takes a broad look at the many ways in which violence inflects the lives of women in Italy. From unchallenged gendered grammar rules to the representation of women as victims, Parmigiani examines the devaluing of women’s contribution to their communities through the words and experiences of the women she interviews. She describes the first uses of the word “femminicidio” as a political term used by and within feminist circles and traces its spread to ultimate legitimization and national relevance. The word redefined women as a political subject by building an imagined community of potentially violated women. In doing so, it challenged Italians to consider the status of women in Italian society, and to make this status a matter of public debate. It also problematized the connection between women and tropes of women as objects of suffering and victimhood. Parmigiani considers this exchange within the context of Italian Catholic heritage, a precarious economy, and long-held notions of honor and shame. Parmigiani provides a careful and searing consideration of the ways in which representations of violence and the politics of this representation are shaping the future of women in Italy and beyond.

Nell’ultimo decennio le discussioni pubbliche sulle questioni transgender sono aumentate in modo esponenziale. Ciò che una volta era considerato un disturbo o addirittura una sfortuna è diventato un’articolazione accettata dell’embodiment di genere, nonché un nuovo spazio per l’attivismo e il riconoscimento politico. Eppure a una maggiore visibilità si è accompagnata anche una grande regolamentazione, che non sempre è andata a favore delle persone trans*. In che modo un’identità stigmatizzata è diventata così centrale nelle articolazioni del sé? E ha senso introdurre nuovi sistemi di regolamentazione se poi la struttura stessa della società rimane immutata? Proprio per questo Halberstam decide di usare il termine trans*, affiancato dall’asterisco: per mettere in discussione tutte le modalità di embodiment di genere, nel tentativo di arrivare a una concezione del corpo non fissa ma in divenire, inclusiva di tutte quelle identità che non si riconoscono in nessuna etichetta o categoria, proprio perché fluide e in continua trasformazione, oltre ogni norma. In questo libro, Jack Halberstam racconta la differenza. Ci avevano indicato gli obiettivi- i soldi, la famiglia, il potere, l'eccellenza - e la strada, fatta di determinazione, sudore della fronte e pensiero positivo: se cadi rialzati, prova ancora e ancora; ci siamo rialzati e abbiamo visto che a cadere era il mondo intorno a noi. Mai come in questi anni è diventato chiaro che l'idea di successo che avevamo in mente è una condanna e che tra volere e potere c'è di mezzo il capitalismo, con tutte le disuguaglianze (e le catastrofi) che si porta dietro. Dobbiamo dunque ridisegnare quell'idea? Dare al termine successo significati nuovi?Jack Halberstam, tra i più noti e originali teorici queer in circolazione, propone una via più radicale e ci guida nell'affollato mondo dei perdenti: lì dove smarrire la strada, non sapere, dimenticare ed essere dimenticati, essere sconvenienti e indecorosi, indisciplinati e improduttivi (tutte cose che le persone queer hanno sempre fatto particolarmente bene) si rivelano strategie possibili per stare al mondo. Correndo il rischio - anzi inseguendolo- di non essere preso sul serio, Halberstam si muove tra teoria alta e bassa, si concede virate controintuitive e disgressioni, si addentra negli «archivi di cose stupide» ricercando forme di conoscenza lontane dal rigore delle discipline. Accade così che in queste pagine vivano insieme Gramsci e SpongeBob, Jamaica Kincaid e il pesciolino Nemo, Saidiya Hartman, Tom of Finland, Valerie Solanas e un'armata di galline in fuga dal pollaio: con loro, Halberstam ci invita a pensare altrimenti, a sperimentare nuove alleanze, a preferire l'ombra alla luce piena, l'illeggibilità al riconoscimento. Con me i fatti, e la Cronaca che li produce, diventano Storia. Rappresentare con verità storica, anche scomoda ai potenti di turno, la realtà contemporanea, rapportandola al passato e proiettandola al futuro. Per non reiterare vecchi errori. Perché la massa dimentica o non conosce. Denuncio i difetti e caldeggio i pregi italici.
