"There are a minimal number of research studies focusing on the perception of the residents in highly polluted neighborhoods. Furthermore, not many studies exist that use a qualitative approach to evaluate how local residents perceive their own neighborhood's pollution issues. By studying the Hegewisch neighborhood in Chicago, I have expanded the understanding of the different perspectives of pollutants in the local environment, and how those pollutants have impacted the experienced health and well-being of residents. The methodology of this research utilizes a qualitative case study approach and relies on resident interviews regarding the perceived effects of environmental issues on their community. The main concerns among the interviewees revolved around five different pollution issues existing in Hegewisch and its surrounding neighborhoods- petcoke, steel slag, landfills, manganese, and odor pollution. The findings of this study show the difference in perception between age groups as well as gender groups. Based on age, the majority of the older generation was more concerned with steel slag and landfills. The majority of the younger generation was more concerned with petcoke and manganese. General well-being and health issues are main concerns expressed among the majority of interviewees across the demographic group. The female participants were overwhelmingly more bothered by odor pollution than the male participants. In conclusion, the majority of interviewees agree that their quality of life is diminished due to a variety of pollutions in the Hegewisch neighborhood."--

Cities, rather than nations, have become the key sites for enacting environmental policies. This is due to the combination of growing urban populations and increased action on the part of local governments (generally attributed to national governments’ failure to act on climate change). Imagining Sustainability seeks to understand how actors in local government conceptualize sustainability and their role in producing it, and what difference that understanding makes to their physical, political, and social environments now and in the future. International comparisons can uncover new ideas and possibilities. Chicago and Melbourne are prime candidates for such a comparison: they are cities of the same age, they have similar historical trajectories as interior gateways followed by industrial growth and then deindustrialization, and they have demonstrated the same recent desire to be global champions of sustainability. Based on qualitative fieldwork in these two cities, this book uses Karen Barad’s methodology of diffraction to read these case studies through each other. This methodology helps to understand not only what differences exist between these two places, but what effects those differences have on the urban environment. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of urban studies, urban planning and environmental policy and governance.

"...the 'proof' of man's destruction of the environment isconsistently flawed.... the scientific method is being abused andignored. The errors are not random, however, but are systematicallybiased toward attempting to prove the guilt of man in the allegeddestruction of the planet. Objective science is disappearing and isbeing replaced by the pursuit of a philosophical agenda." --Richard F. Sanford in Environmentalism and theAssault on Reason Chapter 1 "The public has numerous misconceptions about the relationshipbetween environmental pollution and human cancer. Underlying thesemisconceptions is an erroneous belief that nature is benign." --Bruce N. Ames, Ph.D. and Lois Swirsky Gold, Ph.D inEnvironmental Pollution and Cancer: Some Misconceptions Chapter7 "Greenhouse gases have been increasing in the atmosphere, largely as a result of human activities. However, the climaterecord does not show the temperature increase and other telltalesigns of the expected greenhouse effect. The mathematical modelsused for predicting such effects are evidently not complete enoughto encompass all of the relevant physical processes in theatmosphere, thus throwing grave doubt on the drastic warminghypothesized for the next century." --S. Fred Singer in Global Climate Change: Facts andFiction Chapter 13 "...There is now no prima-facie case for any expensive policy ofsafeguarding species without more extensive analysis than has sofar been done." --Julian L. Addressing global climate change is a monumental battle that can only be fought by the leaders of tomorrow, but future leaders are molded through education and shaped by the leaders of today. While the pivotal role of education in spreading awareness of climate change is one universally espoused, equally universal is the recognition that current education efforts are falling woefully short. Promoting Climate Change Awareness through Environmental Education stems the rising tide of shortcomings in environmental education by plugging a known gap in current research and opening a dialogue for the future. Targeting an audience of young scholars, academics, researchers, and policymakers, this volume provides a much needed dam of empirical evidence regarding the role of youth education in addressing one of the greatest challenges of our age. This timely publication focuses on topics such as building resilience to climate change, green learning spaces, gender issues and concerns for developing countries, and the impact of young adults on the future of environmental sustainability.
