Translation: Theory and Practice: A Historical Reader responds to the need for a collection of primary texts on translation, in the English tradition, from the earliest times to the present day. Based on an exhaustive survey of the wealth of available materials, the Reader demonstrates throughout the link between theory and practice, with excerpts not only of significant theoretical writings but of actual translations, as well as excerpts on translation from letters, interviews, autobiographies, and fiction. The collection is intended as a teaching tool, but also as an encyclopaedia for the use of translators and writers on translation. It presents the full panoply of approaches to translation, without necessarily judging between them, but showing clearly what is to be gained or lost in each case. Translations of key texts, such as the Bible and the Homeric epic, are traced through the ages, with the same passages excerpted, making it possible for readers to construct their own map of the evolution of translation and to evaluate, in their historical contexts, the variety of approaches. The passages in question are also accompanied by ad verbum versions, to facilitate comparison. The bibliographies are likewise comprehensive. The editors have drawn on the expertise of leading scholars in the field, including the late James S. Holmes, Louis Kelly, Jonathan Wilcox, Jane Stevenson, David Hopkins, and many others. In addition, significant non-English texts, such as Martin Luther's "Circular Letter on Translation," which may be said to have inaugurated the Reformation, are included, helping to set the English tradition in a wider context. Related items, such as the introductions to their work by Tudor and Jacobean translators or the work of women translators from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries have been brought together in "collages," marking particularly important moments or developments in the history of translation. This comprehensive reader provides an invaluable and illuminating resource for scholars and students of translation and English literature, as well as poets, cultural historians, and professional translators.

We have all fallen captive to various things in our lives. Whether we've succumbed to unfulfilled dreams, untamed fears, unhealed wounds, or unhealthy habits, we allow them to hold us prisoner even when they hurt us. Eric and Elena Hahn, one couple who longed to walk free from what held them, ventured to the unlikeliest place: the epicenter of Mexico's drug-trafficking empire. There in the most problematic community, the red light district, shattered homes lined the dirt streets where poverty, prostitution, drugs, and every vice and perversion known on earth held the people captive. But there, this couple won the love of broken and desperate children whom sin had beaten down and held captive in ways the Hahns could never fathom. Follow the Hahns' journey as they struggle to reach Mexico's lost children and, in so doing, discover the key to walking in freedom. Learn along with Eric and Elena how to experience the Father heart of God and how to impact your world right now. Eric and Elena Hahn founded His Precious Ones in 2004 to reach Mexico's most lost and desperate young people with God's love. Although beginning mainly with ministry to street kids, Eric and Elena soon discovered the urgent need for all people with broken hearts to understand the Father's love. After six years of living in Mexico, they now reside in Chicago with their newborn twins. Their ministerial focus is on teaching about the Father heart of God and mentoring the next generation.

Winner of the 2018 Pura Belpre Award! “A book for anyone mending from childhood wounds.”—Sandra Cisneros, author of The House on Mango Street In this unforgettable multicultural coming-of-age narrative—based on the author’s childhood in the 1960s—a young Cuban-Jewish immigrant girl is adjusting to her new life in New York City when her American dream is suddenly derailed. Ruthie’s plight will intrigue readers, and her powerful story of strength and resilience, full of color, light, and poignancy, will stay with them for a long time. Ruthie Mizrahi and her family recently emigrated from Castro’s Cuba to New York City. Just when she’s finally beginning to gain confidence in her mastery of English—and enjoying her reign as her neighborhood’s hopscotch queen—a horrific car accident leaves her in a body cast and confined her to her bed for a long recovery. As Ruthie’s world shrinks because of her inability to move, her powers of observation and her heart grow larger and she comes to understand how fragile life is, how vulnerable we all are as human beings, and how friends, neighbors, and the power of the arts can sweeten even the worst of times.

Heightened Chaos will change the way you look at the streets forever. The year was 1979, as the oldest girl of eleven kids that Tomasina bared, gave birth to a baby boy, Johan Garcia at Belleview Hospital, New York City. And like all kids that are born, he possessed a pure heart, mind, body and soul By the time Johan turned four, the innocence he was blessed with at birth, slowly started to fade. One morning as he woke up in one of the most notorious neighborhoods of New York City, Washington Heights, Uptown Manhattan, home of the brave, Dominican land; without his intentions, Johan found himself a member of one of the most powerful secret societies to ever exist in Americas history. His low key gangster Uncle, Jose Eduardo Liriano, got together with a childhood friend, Santiago Rodriguez, A.K.A Yayo, whom later on would be recognized worldwide as one of the smartest gangsters to walk the streets of New York! Robert Jackall, a Williams College sociologist, who has researched the crack trade, once said, One has to recognize Yayos particular and peculiar genius even if one doesnt honor it. So like two kids in a science lab, Mr. Liriano and Mr. Rodriguez, were mixing chemicals together, and a very destructive drug was born. Crack! The drug leeched out from New York to Miami and Los Angeles into the American interior. The crack epidemic led Congress to adopt mandatory-minimum laws, which hit inner-city crack users with penalties as severe as those levied on Wall Street possessing a hundred times more powder cocaine. Over the next decade hundreds of thousands of Americans would be locked up for drug offenses. So many people were smoking crack throughout America, and the violence that it brought to the streets was so severe that President Reagan was forced to declare war on the epidemic. When the crack epidemic exploded, Washington Heights had seemed as if a nuclear bomb had detonated in it. Everyone felt the effects. Dr. Randall D. Marshall at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital treated hundreds of residents; many with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, an illness common among Vietnam veterans. When Johan turned five, he was in the middle of a war that completely over powered him psychologically. Watching the gangsters make millions, murders, and Based heads smoking crack right in front of his door step; by then, his thoughts were covered with darkness. In this fact-inspired tale, narrated by Johan Garcia and written by Roxanne Lyons, you will witness the rise of crack in the United States. And how Mr. Liriano and Mr. Rodriguez were destined to introduce the new drug to the world!

My First Life written by Ignacio Ramonet and has been published by Verso Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-23 with History categories.

Hugo Chvez, military officer turned left-wing revolutionary, was one of the most important Latin American leaders of the twenty-first century. This book tells the story of his life up to his election as president in 1998. Throughout this riveting and historically important account of his early years, Chvez's energy and charisma shine through. As a young man, he awakens gradually to the reality of his country-where huge inequalities persist and the majority of citizens live in indescribable poverty-and decides to act. He gives a fascinating description of growing up in Barinas, his years in the Military Academy, his long-planned military conspiracy-the most significant in the history of Venezuela and perhaps of Latin America-which led to his unsuccessful coup attempt of 1992, and eventually to his popular electoral victory in 1998. His collaborator on this book is Ignacio Ramonet, the famous French journalist (and editor for many years of Le Monde diplomatique), who undertook a similar task with Fidel Castro (Fidel Castro: My Life).
