Around the world, a vast number of children and adolescents suffer from mental and neurological disorders and only a small proportion of them receive adequate care. This is so in both developing and developed countries. The need to raise awareness about this problem and provide specific advice regarding their prevention and treatment was identified as a priority for the World Psychiatric Association by Professor Ahmed Okasha during his Presidency of the Association and resulted in the creation of his Presidential Programme on Child Mental Health. This book presents some of the fruits of this programme and constitutes a global call to action for mental health workers and policy makers. The Mental Health of Children and Adolescents: An area of global neglect brings together information on the burden of mental disorders in childhood and adolescence with methods of raising public awareness of these problems. The book also describes therapeutic and preventive interventions that could diminish them. It then presents the results of field studies in Brazil, Egypt and Russia documenting the effectiveness of interventions to prevent school dropout in those three very different countries. With its emphasis on practical guidance for the development of interventions to prevent or treat child and adolescent mental health, The Mental Health of Children and Adolescents: An area of global neglect provides much-needed information of direct interest to health professionals and the many others involved in the provision of health care to children and adolescents in both the developing and the developed countries.

Ideal for the general practitioner, this practical guide to pediatric mental health explains the various systems involved in children's mental health (i.e. schools, social services, the legal and mental health systems) and addresses common mental health problems seen frequently in practice. Included are chapters on learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, aggression, substance abuse, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and a host of other difficulties. Each chapter is written by a general pediatrician and a child psychiatrist. Blending these perspectives, the authors present a pragmatic and current approach to issues of office evaluation, assessment, and treatment, including pediatric psychopharmacology.

Mental health problems and worries are common among infants, children and adolescents in every part of the world. This book is a practical manual for primary healthcare professionals, teachers and anyone who works with children - especially in places where specialist psychiatric care is not available. After giving the reader an overview of child mental health problems, the manual goes on to deal with the various developmental, behavioural and emotional problems that arise in as many as 10% of the youth population. For each problem it first provides a case study and then describes how to find out more about a child with this problem. It suggests what can be done to help the child and their family. It also examines the mental health aspects of childhood maltreatment and exposure to natural or man-made disasters. Covers problems that health workers and teachers in low- and middle-income countries often have to deal with. Written in simple language with many case examples and pictures. The only comprehensive book on mental healthcare in young people for those with no access to specialist medical advice. This book is intended for anyone who works with children or young people, but who does not have specialist training in mental health problems. This includes: primary care doctors and nurses, community health workers and teachers.

Children In Mind written by Jenny Perkel and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04 with MEDICAL categories.

"Children in Mind presents a broad range of up-to-date findings from psychological, neurobiological, genetic, psychiatric, sociological and epidemiological research related to the diagnosis and treatment of children's mental health problems. Theoretically informed but not theoretically dense, the book cites both local and international studies to increase awareness and understanding of children's mental health. Perkel discusses a broad spectrum of issues faced by today's children and adolescents: the Covid-19 pandemic, the influence of electronic media, diverse family structures, stress and trauma, and difficult socio-economic circumstances. While offering no easy answers or formulaic solutions to the problems of troubled children, she shows how to think about children's mental well-being in today's South Africa and other developing countries."--
