Journey to some of the world's conflict zones through the camera lens of photojournalist Jenny Matthews, as she captures the impact war has on children and their families. This book takes a very personal approach as Jenny recalls some of her most memorable assignments, and the people and children she encountered along the way. The book features photographs with a human and environmental message from some of the world's war-torn hotspots - with a focus on children. The photographs are structured around key themes relating to children's lives and their rights. The supporting text voices Jenny's reactions to what she has seen and gives information about how children have been affected by war in specific conflicts. It also relates the background to wars and conflicts, case studies, key child-related facts, a map and website links.

In Liberia the civil conflict that lasted for a little over a decade not only tore down the country and broke families apart, it destroyed the lives of thousands of children and left them with wounds deeper than the physical eye can see. Like most of the African continent and elsewhere in some parts of the world, little boys and girls were taught to be killers. In Growing Up Naked: The Untold Stories of Children at War, Mc-Anthony Keah recreates the events and captures the story of the inner pain of child soldiers. In a powerful voice using fictional characters, the author brings together the victims (child soldiers), the researcher (Canadian student) and the world (conference participants) to explain what it means for the children and the implications for the world.

War is hell. Especially for families with children living in big cities where the bombs fall and food is scarce. Fathers are drafted into military service and mothers are active on the home-front. There may be long lulls from the bombings, and the kids can go to school and play with their friends. But the food is getting scarce and the kids become skinny. And then, suddenly, much larger bomb attacks strike the city bringing devastation to the neighborhood. In desperation many parents decide to have their children evacuated to a safe neighboring country. And when the war finally ends, most kids will return home within a month or two. But some may stay longer maybe because the parents doubt that the armistice will hold or the food supply improve. My parents opted to play it safe. They also had the impression that we were happy in our safe haven. But my sister and I missed our Mamma and our friends tremendously and wanted to come home. We could not understand why we had to stay away when other kids were sent back home. We resented it and began to loath our Pappa, who, we knew, was behind the decision. It lead to a cold war within the family lasting several years. But over time we all matured, I probably most in need of it, and we were able to become a close-knit family again. Pappa's special efforts to win my heart when I turned 18 changed everything as did, after many setbacks, my improved performance at school and on the dancing floor. Upon his retirement, John Sundgren, a former IMF economist, had plans to write about his many and often adventurous missions to developing countries. And that will be his next project, he hopes. But before that, he wants to break the silence of his generation and tell his children and grandchildren about the not so "good old days" he experienced growing up in Finland. He wants them to know how devastating war can be for a family. It can even trigger in children a lack of trust in grown-ups and their world. He tries to show, from a boy's perspective, why parents and teachers can be seen as enemies, and what it takes to remedy the mistakes, or perceived mistakes, parents have made, even though their intentions were to protect the child. And for a parent, such open hostility, exhibited by one's child, must be hard to take. But the author also wants to show that during the lulls from bombings, the kids still found ways to have fun with their friends.

Children In War written by Elon Perry and has been published by Pen and Sword Military this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-30 with History categories.

Author Elon Perry uniquely combines the narrative of a challenging childhood amidst wartime struggles with the gripping tale of military service in a commando unit. The book differs from other books on the subject because the plot revolves around two themes: a difficult and impoverished childhood during times of war, and military service in a commando unit, carried out with the aim of exacting revenge on the enemy and featuring vivid and detailed descriptions of battles. In the book, real stories and events are infused, including daring operations from the battlefield. Some of these accounts have never before been published, and only today, 40 years after the events, has the Israeli censorship allowed them to be shared. This story can be an inspiration to people who find themselves in desperate situations. They can learn how against all odds and in any given situation one can survive difficulties, as long as one has the will, perseverance, and belief that anything is possible.
