Tennessee, 1862. Fifteen-year-old Elizabeth Edwards hates her personal slave, Anna. Elizabeth has never given much thought to the plight of the slaves on her father's plantation; instead, she focuses on pretty dresses and horses, and dreams of the young man she wants to marry. But Elizabeth's world collapses when she is told she must marry her cousin to keep the plantation in the family. Elizabeth takes out her anger on Anna, who finally snaps and reveals that Elizabeth and she have the same father. Anna is brutally whipped the next day, and Elizabeth is horrified. When she tries to confide in her mother, she finds her secretly kissing Elizabeth's tutor. Elizabeth now feels she has nothing and nobody. She changes her attitude about Anna and asks her to run away with her. They are overheard by two stable hands, Fred and Sam, who have heard of a safe house on the Underground Railroad. The four of them set off, planning to reach Canada. Will they all make it to Canada alive? Does Anna truly forgive Elizabeth, or is she just using her? Is it possible to find love on the run?

The slave narratives compiled from interviews in the Works Projects Administration (WPA) files recorded eyewitness accounts of 19th century American slavery. Elderly ex-slaves recounted memories of their childhood during their enslaved period to convey a powerful image of their lives and daily activities. They describe work, games, food, clothing, thoughts about their situation and the Civil War, and what freedom gave to each one of them. These stories present brief glimpses into the lives and customs of enslaved children on North and South Carolina plantations.

Excerpt from Diddie, Dumps, and Tot: Or Plantation Child-Life IN writing this little volume, I had for my primary object the idea Of keeping alive many. Of the Old stories, legends, traditions, games, hymns, and superstitions Of the South ern slaves, which, with this generation of negroes, will pass away. There are now no more dear Old Mammies and Aunties in our nurseries, no more good Old Uncles in the workshops, to tell the children those old tales that have been told to our mothers and grandmothers for generations - the stories that kept our fathers and grandfathers quiet at night, and induced them to go early to bed that they might hear them the sooner.
