More than ten million adults visit children's museums annually, comprising over one third of total visitation to these institutions. When adults participate in children's museum exhibitions they enrich their own experiences and their children's-but too often exhibits are not developed with adults in mind, leaving them to their own devices, to chat with friends, sit and stare into space, or otherwise disregard the exhibit. This disconnect is reflected in the museum professional literature, which reports on few studies of adult visitors to children's museums, and offers even fewer models of exhibit development practices that incorporate techniques for assessing and improving adult visitors' experiences. To test methods for reducing this gap, I observed adult visitors to four Bay Area children's museum exhibits and interviewed museum staff who had contributed to the development of them. I found that on average adults spent less than half of their time actively participating in exhibit activities (manipulating exhibits or talking about them), but that exhibit components that were designed with adults in mind were more likely to engage them. Formative evaluation-brief, structured observations of adults using prototype exhibits-emerged from this study as the optimal means to better plan for adults in exhibits. These visitors are already coming to museums-exhibit development teams owe it to them and their children to provide an engaging experience for all ages.

Play is an important part of an adult visitor’s museum experience. While recent research shows that adult visitors benefit from opportunities to play much like their younger counterparts, many museums are slow to incorporate play into their exhibits and programming for adults. Recognizing the benefit of play for visitors, some children’s museums are beginning to host adult-only events so older visitors can play with their exhibits and experience their programs. The purpose of this research is to examine adult-only play events at Madison Children’s Museum, Hands On Children’s Museum, and Children’s Museum of Phoenix to understand the museums’ motivation to host these events, the benefits to adult visitors, and how museums in general can incorporate opportunities to play for their adult audience members. Results indicate that these adult-only play events are being well-received by audiences, increasing attendance numbers, and attracting new audiences to the museums. Findings also show that these events are financially lucrative for the museum and could be adapted for use by many museum types.

Snapshots Of Museum Experience written by Elee Kirk and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-20 with Art categories.

Children are one of the major audiences for museums, but their visits are often seen solely from the point of view of museum learning. In Snapshots of Museum Experience, Will Buckingham draws upon Elee Kirk’s research amongst child visitors to the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, to take a different approach. Using a method of photo-elicitation with four-and five-year-old child visitors to the museum, the book investigates children’s experience of the museum, and in the process undermines many of our assumptions about the interests, needs and demands of child museum visitors. Drawing together the fields of museum studies and childhood studies, the book considers children as active creators of the museum visit. It investigates the way that children navigate and take control of the physical and social spaces of the museum, finding their own idiosyncratic pathways through these spaces. It also explores how elements of the museum ‘light up’, becoming salient to the child visitor. Finally, it investigates how children make sense through intellectually and imaginatively engaging with these elements of the museum visit. Snapshots of Museum Experience gives a unique insight into the sheer diversity of children’s museum experiences and discusses how museums might cater more successfully to the needs of their child visitors. As such, it should be of great interest to academics, researchers and students in the fields of museum studies, visitor studies and childhood studies. It should also be essential reading for museum educators and exhibition designers.

Welcoming Young Children into the Museum provides all of the information practitioners need to consider when making the decision to engage with this audience and their carers. Meeting the reader where they are, this guide enables professionals to work toward outcomes that fit with their needs. Working methodically from the initial stages of bringing staff on board, through to implementation and evaluation, readers are carefully steered through each phase. "Big-picture" needs, like adherence to mission, are considered alongside logistical components, like cleaning schedules, to ensure that museums cater to young children in a way that is beneficial to both the visitors and the institution. Drawing on current neurological research and best practices in early childhood education and development, this guide presents case studies from a variety of different institutions around the world that demonstrate that creating interesting, developmentally appropriate opportunities for young children is about much more than just simplifying what is already on offer. Erdman, Nguyen and Middleton demonstrate that the age and needs of the visitors must be taken into careful consideration, as well as the assets and potential obstacles of the institution. Welcoming Young Children into the Museum will be essential reading for professionals working in museums large and small, regardless of type. It will be useful to those who are considering setting up new programmes for early years audiences and those with existing programmes, who would like to improve their offering.

While play in museums for children is not a new concept, there is little research on what play looks like for the adult visitor. This study investigates adult play in museum exhibits designed for family learning, using Stuart Brown’s (2010) typology of play. Thirty visitors were observed between five exhibits at the City Museum, St. Louis MO and Science World, Vancouver B.C. Results showed that adults do play in these exhibits, and that they engage in various types of play, typically favoring body/movement play. These findings can be used by museums to understand how to create active opportunities to fully engage adult visitors.

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of adults who bring children to children's museums. 51 participants aged 20 and above filled out a pre- and post-questionnaire regarding their expectations and later actualizations of epistemic, social, and emotional benefits. The participants reported on benefits for themselves as well as their children. These expected and actualized benefits were then compared to the participant's rating of total museum value to determine which variable significantly contributed to their perception of museum value. Overall, epistemic benefits for both children and adults were found to be significantly different from pre- to post. Child emotional expectations significantly contributed to total museum value, as did actualized adult social and emotional expectations. The total amount of benefits was found to be significantly correlated with museum value. Limitations included questionnaire collection being limited to weekends, no child perspectives included in data, non-visitors excluded from data, and the pre questionnaire could potentially have influenced the results of the post-questionnaire. Implications involve insights for children's museum programmers to better understand both the adult and child's expectations as well as what they perceive the museum to be actually providing. Future directions involve including children, non-visitors, collecting on weekdays, and recording time in and out of museum.

Hands On Exhibitions written by Tim Caulton and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-04-14 with Business & Economics categories.

The development of interactive displays has transformed the traditional museum world in the last decade. Visitors are no longer satisfied by simply gazing at worthy displays in glass cases - they expect to have hands-on experience of the objects and be actively involved with the exhibits, learning informally and being entertained simultaneously. Hands-on museums and science centres provide the most remarkable example of how museums are redefining their roles in society - improving access to real objects and real phenomena, so that they can be enjoyed by more people. In recent years museums have been thrust into intense competition for the public's time and money with all branches of the leisure industry, from commercial theme parks to retail shopping and home entertainment. This has upset the traditional stability of the museum and their visitors. A hands-on approach encourages a broader visitor base, which in turn helps to bring in additional revenue at a time of declining public subsidy. Tim Caulton investigates how to create and operate effective exhibitions which achieve their educational objectives through hands-on access. He concludes that the continuing success of hands-on museums and science centres hinges on attaining the very best practice in exhibition design and evaluation, and in all aspects of operations, including marketing and financial and human resource management. Hands-On Exhibitions provides a practical guide to best practice which will be indispensable to all museum professionals and students of museum studies.
