The taste for chinoiserie, which originated and developed in the West during the 17th century, reinterpreted the themes, ornamentation and decorative techniques of the Far East and China. This volume is the first published on Italian Chinoiserie, a style developed slightly later in Italy than at other European courts, but which flourished rapidly and spectacularly during the 18th century when a passion for the Orient heavily influenced the rococo style. Throughout the peninsula many of the Italian courts - from the Bourbons in Sicily and Campania to the Savoys in Piedmont, from the Veneto to papal Rome and including Florence and the Medici, later Lorraine, Grand Duchy - indulged their enthusiasm for chinoiseries creating some intriguing works of art. No field was left untouched and the author of this volume has taken pains to cover them all: from architecture (the Chinese Palace at Palermo) to interior decorative painting (the rooms frescoed by Tiepolo in Vicenza and the 'Chinese' rooms of Naples and Palermo), from ceramics and porcelain (the Capodimonte Porcelain Room) to cabinet making (Venetian lacquered furniture in particular, but also the Lacquer Room in Turin), to fabrics and all other decorative arts. ILLUSTRATIONS 200 colour & 95 b/w *

Pagodas In Play written by Adrienne Ward and has been published by Bucknell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Music categories.

Pagodas in Play analyzes the treatment of China in the imaginative and spectacular world of eighteenth-century Italian opera. It shows how Italians used perceptions of Chinese culture to address local and transnational developments, particularly Enlightenment and secular reform initiatives. Its focus on the texts and performance practices of opera, an entertainment form accessible to a wide public, reveals cultural operations and identities harder to detect in non-fictional reformist writings, the texts traditionally privileged to explain Italian mediations of Enlightenment ideas. In its close reading of nine libretti of the most salient Settecento operas treating China (opere serie and opere buffe by authors including Metastasio, Zeno, Goldoni and Lorenzi), Pagodas in Play differentiates Italian iterations of Chinese culture from French and English counterparts. It further challenges certain tenets of orientalism, showing how it operates when nationalist and/or colonialist projects are absent, and how orientalist practices in eighteenth-century Italy exhibit early on the complexity some scholars locate only in the twentieth century. Adrienne Ward teaches Italian literature and culture at the University of Virginia.

Encountering China written by Rachana Sachdev and has been published by Bucknell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-01 with History categories.

Encountering China addresses the responses of early modern travelers to China who, awed by the wealth and sophistication of the society they encountered, attempted primarily to build bridges, to explore similarities, and to emulate the Chinese, though they were also critical of some local traditions and practices. Contributors engage critically with travelogues, treating them not just as occasional sources of historical information but as primary, literary texts deeply revelatory of the world they describe. Contributors reach back to the earliest European writings available on China in an effort to broaden and nuance our understanding of European contact with the Middle Kingdom in the early modern period. While the primary focus of these essays is the external gaze – European sources about China – contributors also tease out aspects of the Chinese world-view of the time, thus generating a conversation between Chinese literary and historical texts and European ones.

This book discusses examples of how the U.S. Founding Fathers were influenced and inspired by Chinese agriculture, architecture, and philosophy. China, then one of the most stable and powerful civilizations in the world, offered unique perspectives on various aspects of society which were distinct from the Founding Fathers’ European heritage. China provided an alternative set of social and political frameworks which supported the Founding Fathers’ efforts to craft a unique heritage for their young nation. These Founders sought to establish a political identity that was distinct from European aristocratic traditions.
