Pakistan and China enjoy exemplary friendly ties, which have been expanding and becoming even deeper with time. China's main geopolitical focus in South Asia is to restrain India as a competitor by using Pakistan as a proxy. China's growing economic and security relation with Pakistan, and the unholy nexus between the two, remains a major worry for India as the growing Chinese involvement is bound to erode India's influence in the region. Another area of concern has been the lack of credible Indian deterrence to the hybrid threats that it faces as a result of such collusivity between Pakistan and China. This book is the culmination of a series of discussions held under the aegis of the United Service Institution of India on the subject of Sino-Pak Collusivity and Hybrid Warfare. The book contains details on Concepts and Determinants of Hybrid Warfare, an objective assessment of the China-Pakistan Collusive Threats and their Implication for India, and makes Policy recommendations for India in the Time-Frame up to 2030.

Pakistan has a long and strong relationship with China. The long-standing ties between the two countries have been mutually beneficial. Since the 1962 Sino-Indian War, Pakistan has supported China on most issues of importance to the latter, especially those related to the question of China's sovereignty. Looking into the future, China’s expanding influence in Central Asia and its interest in overland access to the Arabian Sea could motivate even stronger links with Pakistan. The nexus is a live threat for India having military and non-military manifestations. These are irreversible strategic realities which India cannot ignore. Hence India’s foreign policy formulations and initiatives must factor in these threats and determine the course and direction of its foreign policy and response to threats emanating from the nexus. This book helps in understanding these threats and provides options for India to counter the China-Pakistan Nexus without hurting the growing Indo China economic relations.

Development of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor is a fulcrum of the One Belt One Road Initiative through which China seeks to realise the ‘Chinese Dream’ to be a global power and a regional hegemon. The Corridor connects China’s Western Xinjiang with Pakistan’s Makran Coast, traversing through one of the most challenging geographic as well as human terrain that would require extra-ordinary engineering resources to execute, massive amounts to fund and extreme political acumen to manage the untameable societal fissures. That indeed is a tall and complex order. The Corridor brings up a host of strategic adversities to India. While pumping-up Pakistan’s innate anti-Indian dogma and China’s compulsive India-averseness, the Corridor violates India’s sovereignty, even if disputed, over the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, and consolidates the duo’s political nexus with conjoined military capabilities against India. India’s problems are further exacerbated when the Initiative consolidates Pakistan’s illegal occupation of North-Western Kashmir and inter alia seals the severance of India’s traditional land connectivity’s with Afghanistan and the Central Asian Republics. This Book, besides describing the plans and challenges of construction and gainful management thereafter, highlights that since China believes in crystallising its ‘dream’ with the backing of political, and by implication, military power, it is obvious that the Initiative would have more than just purely economic consequences.

The Beijing-Islamabad axis plays a central role in Asia's geopolitics, from India's rise to the prospects for a post-American Afghanistan, from the threat of nuclear terrorism to the continent's new map of mines, ports and pipelines. China is Pakistan's great economic hope and its most trusted military partner; Pakistan is the battleground for China's encounters with Islamic militancy and the heart of its efforts to counter-balance the emerging US-India partnership. For decades, each country has been the other's only 'all-weather' friend. Yet the relationship is still little understood. The wildest claims about it are widely believed, while many of its most dramatic developments are hid- den from the public eye. This book sets out the recent history of Sino-Pakistani ties and their ramifications for the West, for India, for Afghanistan, and for Asia as a whole. It tells the stories behind some of its most sensitive aspects, including Beijing's support for Pakistan's nuclear program, China's dealings with the Taliban, and the Chinese military's planning for crises in Pakistan. It describes a relationship increasingly shaped by Pakistan's internal strife, and the dilemmas China faces between the need for regional stability and the imperative for strategic competition with India and the USA.
